Mick Shots: The Score And More

* Brad Johnson says he doesn’t feel slighted Tony Romo is doing everything possible get back under center despite his broken right little finger, and that includes possibly getting back in time for Sunday in St. Louis. He realizes the only difference in his preparation this week is the amount of snaps he takes in practice. Almost all. Everything else is the same, because he knows he has to do all the same stuff since there’s always a chance he could be in after the first play of the game.
* The addition of veteran Carlos Polk isn’t the only change the Cowboys will be making on special teams this Sunday. Obviously without Pacman and Felix Jones, the Cowboys will make changes on their return teams, Patrick Crayton returning punts and Miles Austin the sole kick-off returner since the Cowboys have gone to a single return man formation. But that’s not all, because with Mike Jenkins starting, he’ll likely come off KO coverage and watch for the Alan Ball, expected to be active, jumping on that special team. And I like this move with Polk. He’s a linebacker, a paid tackler, and one of those special teams specialists. To me, the Cowboys have too many offensive guys on coverage teams. While I know covering kicks is their job, they didn’t make it this far in football “tackling.” You know what I mean? And there will be more changes with Anthony Spencer likely out and Kevin Burnett, the leading special teams tackler (13), missing practice the past two days. Just what a struggling unit needs.
* Still can’t understand all the negativity about the Roy Williams trade. Says here he went to the Pro Bowl last year. Is not a Pro Bowl receiver worth a first-round pick? And for the Cowboys to even get a chance to look at a WR of his quality in the draft, from where they likely will be selecting – unless the bottom falls out and they have a losing record this year – they would have to give up at least a third to move up high enough in the first round to get that kind of receiver. And just think, even after trading the third, too, they still have a third left for 2009. This way, at least you get a guy with a track record. What am I missing?
* And the score . . . not knowing who’s playing and who’s not, and seeing that last Sunday was the first time the Rams have scored more than 14 points in a game this year (19), this one could be one of those uglies. But you know what, with the situation the Cowboys are in, with all these injuries, they – and you will, too – will take ugly, so how about, Cowboys 19, Rams 13? A win would be a win in my books.
