Some Christmas Present For Colombo
Posted by mickshot at 12/24/2008 3:51 PM CST on truebluefanclub.com
Cowboys right tackle Marc Colombo celebrated his Boston Celtics’ 19-game winning streak, a franchise record, by flying a team championship towel from the ceiling over his locker out here at The Ranch on Wednesday. And now he will celebrate Christmas on Thursday with the new contract he officially signed that same day.
Although both sides had previously agreed to the four-year, $22 million deal, with $11.5 million guaranteed on Dec. 7, the deal didn’t get finalized until Christmas Eve since some kinks had to be worked out to conform to some of the new tax laws.
This means Colombo, who was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in March of 2009, becomes the last of the team’s starting five offensive linemen to get signed to long-term deals and ensuring the line will be intact at least through 2010, after which guard Kyle Kosier’s original five-year deal expires.
Going into Sunday’s game at Philadelphia, Colombo has started 47 straight games since taking over as the team’s starting right tackle during 2006 season. The former 2002 first-round pick of the Chicago Bears had battled serious knee injuries his first 3½ seasons in the NFL before getting released in 2005. The Cowboys took a chance on the Boston-area native and Boston College all-conference player by signing him that season, telling him to just get healthy for 2006, when he earned the starting job.
