Third Tight End Now Up For Grabs

Posted by mickshot at 6/5/2009 4:00 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

This might not become training camp headline material, but there’s some good competition brewing for the Cowboys’ third tight end spot, if correctly assuming the first two will go to Pro Bowler Jason Witten and last year’s No. 2 Martellus Bennett.

Expected to battle for the third spot will be Rodney Hannah, he of the practice squad the past two years, sixth-round pick John Phillips of Virginia, rookie free agent Jamar Hunt of UTEP and the recently signed Scott Chandler, a 2007 fourth-round draft choice of San Diego where he played in only one game as a rookie and spent all of 2008 on injured reserve (toe).

That means of the four, Chandler, the former Carroll High School receiver from nearby Southlake, Texas, actually is the only one to have played in an NFL game. And he’ll get a decent look during the remaining three OTA workouts and the three-day minicamp (June 15-17) since Hannah is out with a broken finger on his right hand.

The Cowboys have been grooming the inexperienced Hannah for two years, and are expecting big things from him this year and a reason they chose not to re-sign Tony Curtis, last year’s third guy. He had been looking good in these no-contact workouts running routes until damaging his finger blocking.

Phillips also has looked pretty fluid running routes and catching the ball, but is only 250 pounds. Chandler, in his third full off-seasons of training, checks in at 265 and Hannah, the former basketball player at Houston, has bulked up to 260.

Tight end up for grabs eh? You don't say?

What type of forum is this, anyway?

Depending on how good a guy like Phillips or Chandler looks blocking out of the backfield and on special teams, and I could see a guy like Cricket getting squeezed.

Whatever fatty. The navy is going to use you as a ballast for an aircraft carrier if your gut gets any bigger.

Ditto.

I've been saying all along that keeping 4 TEs, as long as one of them can play a H-Back type role as well, is a real possibility.

Well, Hannah isn't too happy about the situation. He's kind of mentioned that he's pretty stressed right now.

Mickey must be scraping the bottom of the barrel for stories. Then again, when isn't he.

Haha. Kind of what I was thinking. 3rd TE? With the size of the new stadium, I'd bet theres a few vendor positions up for grabs too. Hopefully Mick can give us the info on those.

I would make sure that our 3rd TE is a great blocker before anythign else. The other two guys can more than handle the pass catching duties.

I think Hannah will come out on top....he is up to 260 lbs....big TE...hopefully he can still move.

Hannah is already at a disadvantage. He's injured, and probably won't get to play for some time, and the big kid from UVA is a NFL ready blocker by most accounts. Hannah is the more athletic TE type than the blocking TE type IMO.

I think Hannah's days are numbered. He'll get a job somewhere else though. He shouldn't be too worried. Hell, he'd probably make the 53 of most teams in the league.

I really like Hannah. I think he's athletic enough to make some plays against real NFL defenses. The only question is if he can block.

If Phillips is only 250, it sounds like he needs a year in the weight room. Maybe we can get him to the practice squad.

The question may be, does he want to?

Rodney Hannah has the size and athleticism to play in the NFL.

I'm wondering if Hot Rod is willing to get his hands dirty as a blocker and on special teams.

That is what it will take to make the team, IMO.

The NFL has forbidden three man blocking wedges on kick returns, so teams will likely move away from using reserve offensive linemen in that capacity. That opens the door for athletic linebackers and tight ends to take their place.

Hannah can be a solid special teams performer if he's willing to buy into it.

Jason Witten and Martellus Bennett are both complete players, which doesn't leave a big need for the third tight end to be either a blocking specialist or pass catching demon.

Whoever shows up the most on specials will likely get his ticket punched.

What's it going to be then, eh?

since when did being a 250 lb TE become a problem

It isn't. Phillips is just fine as a blocker. In fact he was one of the best all-around tight ends in this past draft. He might be 251, but he has the technical base down already. Hannah might be bulking up but he has a ways to go to catch Phillips in terms of method.

If John Phillips doesn't make the team, then this draft was a failure.
