One Thing Romo Could Take From Kitna

...What I am referring to this time is on the field, specifically on third downs.

Did you realize Kitna had the third-highest quarterback rating in the NFL on third-down plays last season? Just behind Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger, Kitna had a rating of 113.1, thanks mostly to his 70.4 percent completion percentage, which topped all players in that category. It didn’t hurt that he threw just two picks on third downs, along with seven touchdowns.

Regardless if you’re running the ball effectively and getting into more manageable situations on third downs . . . it’s still a third down. It’s still the play that usually says “we’re extending this drive or we’re punting.”

Romo had a 94.9 overall rating last year, but was just 55.7 on third down. Again, he’s probably dealing with much longer distances than Kitna, considering the Cowboys ran the ball the second half of the season. That happened because they were more committed to it once Jason Garrett took over. Garrett realized they needed to hold the ball longer and keep some of those great quarterbacks off the field.

Whatever the reason, it worked...

I'd like to see Romo under center with that enthusiastic Cowboys team of the second half of the season. I'm sure he would've had much better stats over those last 8 games. Not to take anything from Kitna - he was amazing at times.

I have to say it does matter the situation, yes it is 3rd down but 3rd and 4 is much easier to complete than 3rd and 15.

We are also going by stats for 1 year how about over the course of Romo career.

Romo needed to throw the ball more than 2 yards on 3rd downs.
