SAN ANTONIO - If head coach Wade Phillips had it his way, the first-team offense would take the opening kickoff Sunday night in Canton, march the field about "8-10 plays" that ends with a touchdown and that would be the end of the night for the starters.
Defensively, he'd probably like to see about two or three quick series of three-and-outs, preferably with a turnover included, and then his first-teamers would be allowed to take their pads off as well.
Now that's an ideal situation for the starters in Sunday night's Hall of Fame Game against the Bengals, but the plan may not work out that way.
"Most of the rotation is going to be what everyone can surmise," Phillips said. "Our first group will play some plays. The number of plays is the key. I'd rather not have three three-and-outs. I just want to give them a feel for playing. They won't get many plays, but it's a start."
"Then we've got a lot of guys we've got to look at. Really, our second-team group will finish the first half and play into the second half."
Phillips said the coaching staff has a few players it would like to see more in this first game, and he mentioned wide receiver/kick returner Titus Ryan, who is listed first on the depth chart on both punt and kickoff return.
"I want to give him an opportunity. That's what he did in Canada," Phillips said of Ryan, a former CFL standout. "With his speed, I want to see what he does."
Phillips said other players will be included in the return game, including cornerback Cletis Gordon, who is having a solid training camp as he competes for the fourth corner spot.
"There're a lot of guys I think can make the team, help the team and play some, and maybe even emerge as a good player," Phillips said. "I tell them, 'we want to see how you play in the game and compete against somebody.' A lot of the evaluation is how they play in the ballgame."
