Quick Points From Tuesday's OTA Practice
Posted by nickeatman at 5/19/2009 1:39 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

Here are few practice notes that came out of Tuesday’s OTA practice at Standridge Stadium in Carrollton:

·In a surprise to all of the players and certainly the attending media, special teams coach Joe DeCamillis was not only at practice, but ran the special teams portion of the session. Wearing a stabilizing neck brace and a carrying a megaphone to shout out his instructions, DeCamillis was able to resume his special teams duties, despite being discharged from the hospital just nine days ago. DeCamillis had surgery to stabilize a broken neck he suffered in the collapse of the Cowboys’ practice facility at Valley Ranch on May 2.

·A special visitor for Tuesday’s practice was PGA golfer Rich Beem, who shares a name with injured Cowboys scouting assistant Rich Behm. Beem, in town for two weeks for Byron Nelson Championship in Las Colinas and then next week’s Colonial in Fort Worth, announced his “Beem Fore Behm” fundraising program. This week, Beem will pledge $100 for every birdie he makes in the next week for the Behm Family Foundation. Rich Behm remains hospitalized after his back and spine injury he suffered on May 2 that resulted in permanent paralysis.

·Tony Romo conducted his first press conference since the regular-season finale loss to the Eagles last December. It was also the first time Romo has been asked about the departure of Terrell Owens, who was released in early March. To no surprise, Romo redirected most questions for T.O., and stated he was never asked or approached about the move from Cowboys’ management. “I’m a player. You don’t get yourself involved in all of that,” Romo said.

·There were six players on the roster not practicing on Tuesday. Rookies Victor Butler (Oregon State) and Mike Mickens (Cincinnati) have yet to finish their college semesters. Nick Folk (hip), Kyle Kosier (foot) and Jason Hatcher (knee scope) are still rehabbing injuries. Defensive tackle Tim Anderson, who signed this off-season, was not in attendance for the voluntary workouts.

·Although we’re still early in the OTA practices and the players were in nothing close to full pads, there were some interesting moves in the starting lineup. Greg Ellis worked with first-team defense at outside linebacker ahead of Anthony Spencer. Mike Jenkins worked at right cornerback and Keith Brooking was indeed a starter inside, next to Bradie James.

·On the offensive side of the ball, the only noticeable change was Montrae Holland at the first-team left guard spot in place of Kosier. Last year, when Kosier went down, the Cowboys went with Cory Procter, who saw most of his action at backup center.

·Felix Jones looked back to full strength, recovering from toe and hamstring injuries that limited him to just six games during his rookie season.
·Last season, it was the safety Roy Williams changing his number officially from No. 31 to No. 38. This year, the wide receiver Roy made a temporary switch back to his college number. Williams will continue to wear No. 11 during the season, but changed to No. 4 for practice. Another number Williams is targeting is 212. The receiver said he plans on dropping about six pounds from his current weight of 218, where he played last season.

Wade was supposed to have a PC this "early afternoon", I thought... Has anyone heard when it might be? I don't see anything about it on DC.com.

Anyone know if the Ticket will still carry the PCs now that they aren't the official station of the team?

He just had the screws removed, no reason to do anything stupid for an OTA.

Hey Hey, Boo Boo! That Romo's smarter than the average bear!

It is way too early for this to cause a controversy of any kind.

FWIW... Mosley was talking about the OTAs on GAC. Unfortunately I think I just caught the very end.

But he said for one, there wasn't that much difference with Wade being the DC. Said he was still walking around some and Campo was helping run the D.

And... He also said at one point the D was doing something and on the other end of the field the WRs started to do some other drill. He said they started a little early, and Wade blew the whistle and really yelled at them and let them have it about not starting the drill until he said so. Even Mosley was a little impressed and said maybe Wade was indeed going to be a little different this year.

Hopefully, Mosley's impression is an accurate one. Wade Phillips being more assertive would be a GOOD thing.

He also said Sam Hurd was the star of the day, diving for catches etc. He said the Crayton and Austin dropped some catches. Also that Felix ran well but also dropped some passes. I really don't think Mosely really knows what to look for when watching practices but I guess any news is better than none.

Cool. You have to love Sam's work ethic and attitude.

I've always liked Sam Hurd.

Hurd adopted Terrell Owens' diet tailored to his own physiology about two years ago in order to help gain muscle, a problem he was having akin to Kevin Burnett.

Hurd learned every position as a rookie and actually started two games as a rookie in favor of Patrick Crayton. Hurd came up with some big catches as a sophomore in '07 on his way to a 300 yard season as our third wideout.

Many seem to be ignoring Hurd after he missed last year because of a high ankle sprain, but he's been hard at work as usual and focusing on improving his speed and quickness.

Hurd doesn't have the upside of Miles Austin, but he was always a safer bet to just come in and be able to help the team.

I'm looking forward to seeing him back on the field.

If Ellis stays ahead of Spencer for long, that's not good news. Spencer could be on his way to becoming the next Bobby Carpenter.

Tim MacMahon E-mail News tips

This will be passing-game intensive, because you can't tell a whole lot about the running game when the players aren't wearing pads.

*Wade Phillips mentioned that it's normal for the timing between receivers and quarterbacks to be off at this time of year, even though they've had informal throwing sessions twice per week. We saw that and some sloppiness on the receivers' end. There were several drops.

*WR Sam Hurd, who is somewhat of a forgotten man coming off of ankle surgery, did not contribute to the drop total. He caught everything he got his hands on, including a diving grab by the sideline on a low rope thrown by Jon Kitna. Hurd isn't a guy who gets great separation -- and he might not be 100 percent yet -- but his hands might be the best on the team.

*Yes, the 36-year-old Kitna can still throw ropes. Unlike the last couple of years, the experienced backup's arm strength won't be a concern for the Cowboys.

*Also didn't see a drop by coachable WR Roy Williams, who might argue about Hurd having the best hands on the team. Williams, who wore No. 4 (his Texas number), made an especially nice play on an out route in front of Terence Newman. Williams snared the pass with his hands, away from his body, and chopped his feet to make sure he got both in bounds. He celebrated by getting behind a camera located on the track and pretending to film practice.

*WR Miles Austin did have a couple of passes clank off his hands, but he also displayed his ability to be a deep threat. He twice got great separation on double-move deep routes and made plays on underthrown balls both times. On the first one, he rebounded an underthrown Romo pass after it bounced off safety S Tra Battle's helmet. On the second one, Austin made a nice adjustment to sky over CB Orlando Scandrick to snare Stephen McGee's pass.

*Several players had problems with the footing at Standridge Stadium, which has the new-age, grass-like artificial turf. Terence Newman stumbled to the ground twice while trying to break on a ball. Scandrick and SS Gerald Sensabaugh got picks when receivers slipped coming out of their breaks.

*CB Mike Hawkins had great coverage on a stop-and-go route by WR Patrick Crayton during 1-on-1 drills, but Crayton torched Hawkins on a similar route during 7-on-7. Kitna's deep ball hit Crayton in stride on the second route.

*CB/S Alan Ball made a leaping deflection of a Kitna pass on a crossing route intended for WR Travis Wilson. Ball got praise from secondary coach Dave Campo throughout the workout.

*Seventh-round WR Manuel Johnson beat FS Ken Hamlin for what would have been a long touchdown. Hamlin was stride for stride with Johnson but never made a play for the ball.

*Mike Jenkins got all the reps at the cornerback opposite Terence Newman during team drills.

*Sensabaugh got all the first-team reps at strong safety. He had good coverage of Jason Witten on an intermediate out early in team drills.

*Montrae Holland worked with the first-team at left guard, as Kyle Kosier worked on the side with associate athletic trainer Britt Brown. Cory Procter worked as the second-team center. Pat McQuistan, who was the swing tackle the last two seasons, worked at left guard with the second unit. The tackles were Doug Free (left) and third-round pick Robert Brewster (right).

*WR Isaiah Stanback was among the players who stayed after practice to catch punts.

Who said Roy Williams would pull a page out of the Larry Fitzgerald playbook and drop some weight?

:)

If Anthony Spencer stays healthy, there is no way Greg Ellis will hold him off.

It is interesting that Ellis started with the first team, because Spencer had him beat last year and got hurt at Denver.

Motivation is never a bad thing.

I'm betting on Spencer and the rookies to send the over rated, over priced, and poor (selfish) attitude Greg Ellis packing out the door.

Good luck with that. Ellis has supposedly been out the door for three years. He may not get a new contract, but he'll be here this season, primarily because the coaching staff doesn't agree with your first and third assessments.

Well a couple years ago Ellis was worried about his job when they drafted Spencer, Wade said that he shouldn't worry until there are a couple more like him. Butler and B Williams being drafted should make him worry imo.
