DC.com: "Doubtful" Raiders Go Hard After Huff

Huff should have never been playing strong safety in the NFL.

The Raiders moved Huff to FS and he lost his job. They have tried to trade him during both of the past two offseasons with no interest. Dallas had a need at FS last year and even chose to go with Ball instead of Huff. Dallas' new D-coordinator id Rob Ryan who saw Huff first hand flame out as a safety. Back then, Huff built a reputation of not taking practice seriously. He played like he paracticed under Ryan - with poor results. And we all think Dallas will seriously persue him now? I highly doubt it.

That by chance, wasn't with the same team that took a high first round draft pick at offensive tackle, and then moved him inside before releasing him...was it?

Huff worked his backside off while at the University of Texas...and the old three year rule of judging a player coming into the league is there for a reason. Funny, at year three, and when the light starts to come on for a young veteran, Huff responded just as predicted. Strongly...now, no wonder why Oakland still doesn't have a viable quarterback and choses to give much of the workload for running back still to Bush, instead of their, again top of draft prospect, who came to them from Arkansas when Dallas got Felix Jones.

what position did he play last year?

He played FS in 2010. He had a good - not great - year, much like the year before (2009). But in 2009 he opened the season splitting snaps at FS with another teammate because the Raiders were not "sold" on him at FS,and that's because in 2008 Michael Huff was benched for underperforming on the field. Warren Sapp was a teammate of Huff's on the Raiders and he publically commented that Huff had poor practice habits that would drive Sapp nuts.

Now, whenever football resumes, Huff either will become an unrestricted free agent, able to go to the highest bidder, or Oakland must pay him $6.325 million to retain his services for 2011.

A little-known rule prevented the Raiders from re-signing Huff this past season, as much as they would have liked to, according to an NFL source.

why do teams keep letting Rob Ryan get away?

he played well in 09 and 10, so it was not just a contract season. I grant you the 1st part of his career he got off to a slow start but over the last 2 season he has matured as a player and it has reflexed in his play.

He did? If anything he played average at best in 09 and 10.

I did not say anything about being a HOF I said he played well. I think he would be a good fit in Dallas. I'm not putting him in the upper elite catagory by no means but I also know with one of the highest payrolls in the NFL we are not going to be going after elite. We do not have the means

He would and since NYC disagrees, I am completely on board with Huff.

:laugh2: If that is a good enough reason for you then stick to your guns.

Myself I like NYC we do not see some things eye to eye but that is cool. For me I like Huff and think putting him at FS would be a big help to this team. Clearly he is not one of the tops but as I said I don't think Dallas can afford going after the top players and the money they are after.

'Top' money seems to be going towards Landry, Baltimore, and Sensabaugh.

Son, with your obvious brilliance as a personnel evaluator, it's a wonder that you're not working in the NFL...

I mean, if I didn't have you sharing all this knowledge, I wouldn't have known that 94 tackles, 4 sacks, 3 ints and 7 passes defensed was "average at best" performance for a safety...

Nope, silly me, I would have thought that was a pretty damned good year...

And 14 passes defensed along with 3 ints the year before sounds like pretty fair coverage to me, too...

Hey, Bear, nice to have you abouts...and could you do us a favor, and get us an undrafted for dummies update on who Dallas should focus upon once the undrafted get their opening gates for the race.
