Maybe it always works out this way, or our minds think it works this way. But is it me, or does there seem to be only about eight players in the upcoming draft. Fitting the Cowboys would be at No. 9.

Now, that’s just my opinion on who is elite and who isn’t. But of those “cant-miss” variety players, it appears like they will be gone when the Cowboys’ turn arrives at No. 9. That doesn’t mean something crazy doesn’t happen in those first eight.

But think about it from the Cowboys’ standpoint, there’s about five players that would make pretty good sense if they could them. Those guys include Nick Fairley, Marcell Dareus, DaQuan Bowers, Von Miller and Patrick Peterson – in no particular order, of course...

Looks to me like there are only 6 elite types, and two QBs that will appeal to the desperate teams lacking any semblance of excellence at that position.

Of course, historically, drafts are littered with 'no miss, elite types' that flopped. Even at the top of the draft, teams cross their fingers and hope their odds are better than 50/50.

Last year we found a top five talent, can't miss player with the 21st pick. By draft time, some of these players will slip.

is it me and im going to exaggerate here, if Dallas had the number 2 pick from what i read on this forum, all the players would be gone and yes no talent would be left.

How ever did we get Dez on this team? Looks like only other teams draft better, *excluding that 09 draft* and it seems all talent is gone regardless of where we pick.

My first thought when I seen the title, Are there even 5?

Hopefully there is some hidden gold in this draft for us somewhere. :)

I think this article and some posters on this board have identified the so-called "elite" prospects, and it stops at 8. They are generally referred to as:

Patrick Peterson
Nick Fairley
Marcel Dareus
A.J. Green
Von Miller
Cam Newton
Blaine Gabbert
DaQuan Bowers

Most draft "experts" would agree that these 8 are the elite, most highly coveted, talked about, most likely to be drafted high, whatever u wanna call it....

Just so happens, the Cowboys pick at 9....Puts us in a good position in my mind. Someone will slip. Althought the article correctly mentions that the Boys have no need for one of the QB'S, so hopefully they are not the ones that slide.

I personally believe Robert Quinn should be included in that elite group to make 9.

Hes close to 1 than 9 if youre not worried about his brain tumor from HS

Julio Jones is another guy in that mix as well.

Well he wasn't considered can't miss by 20 other teams because he had all the off the field issues. Talent wise everybody knew he was a hit, but he had other issues that made him fall. The guys the article refers to don't have major red flags like Dez did.

Some of them do. Newton's got character concerns, and Bowers has significant health concerns.

Carolina - Newton
Denver - Dareus
Bills - Von Miller
Bengals - Nick Fairley
Cardinals - Blaine Gabbert
*Trade - Cowboys - Peterson
SF - Robert Quinn
* Trade - Commanders - AJ Green
Browns - Julio Jones
Titans - Daquan Bowers or Jake Locker
Texans - Prince Amukumara

I'd like to hear Nick Eatman's response to this. Because I feel those few words completely destroyed his entire article.

I thought they paid a scouting dept to find players at every draft position.

Damage control for when Jerruh gets fleeced in a trade down.

You mean like in 2009, when the Cowboys traded down from round 2 and into round 3 and drafted (gulp) Jason Willliams and Robert Brewster...:)

That was the last time the Cowboys turned down a really good value at the OT position (Phil Loadholt). The Cowboys over rated Mark Colombo, because Colombo was never a good enough player to turn down a real good value like Loadholt in round 2. That worked out well...;) (See Loadholt block the Cowboys in the divisional round, while Ray Edwards runs around, through, and under Mark Colombo.) Dallas has lost two divisional playoff games, because their RT couldn't block the other team's LDE.

Will the Cowboys over rate Doug Free, a serviceable LT at best, imo. If the Cowboys are lucky, they might get 4 or 5 serviceable years at LT from Doug Free. Free isn't even close to being on Adams' level at LT, and he is probably as good as he is going to get. If the Cowboys organization is happy with "serviceable" at LT and is willing to continue to play with average to way below average or terrible RT play, I think that they will pay a high price on the football field.

That is just the edges on the offensive line. The interior is fading fast and is collectively old. The drop off in Kosier's and Davis' play (from 2009) was big and significant last year. Kosier's run blocking graded out poor or negative and was below average according to PFF. Davis was an average starter last year and graded out better than Kosier according to Pro Football Focus. Kosier's and Davis' drop off should disturb the team going into the 2011 season. Gurode's run blocking dropped significantly from 2009, but he was still the 6th best center in run blocking and graded out above average (overall grade) according to Pro Football Focus. All three starting interior offensive linemen will be 33 when Kosier turns 33 in November.

I stated a while back that I thought a drop off in talent would occur around S.F. or Tennessee. Tyron Smith is currently in the 9-13 range and has great value to Dallas at 9. On the other hand, players like Quinn and Bowers face medical, character, and some other concerns.

I don't think the Cowboys would draft Bowers due to Anthony Spencer. Bowers' true value is being a 43 DE, not a 34 DE. Also, Von Miller projects to Ware's position, and I don't think he is an inside linebacker in a 34. Where would you play him? If you draft him at 9, he has to play and play every down, imo. Perhaps, Miller can play OT when he isn't on the field on defense.

You can draft A.J. Green or Julio Jones, but Dez Bryant and Miles Austin are in their way. That eliminates them. Maybe, one of them can play OT?

The Green Bay Packers gave the Cowboys the blue print at 9. They stayed put and drafted B.J. Raiji, a cornerstone player on their defensive line.

If the Cowboys stay put at 9, Tyron Smith will give them a cornerstone player on their offensive line, and it needs it bad. Smith will most likely have to only clear the Cardinals at 5. Arizona, Cleveland, and Buffalo will at least look at him. After that, Dallas, Washington, Minnesota, and Detroit will look at him closely.

Tyron Smith is a blue chip, cornerstone player in the offensive line and trading down to pick an inferior player (ie. J.J. Watt, Cameron Jordan, or Gabe Carimi) and adding another third round pick (Robert Brewster where are you?), will land you out of the playoffs next year.

Blue chip, cornerstone players win championships, and you don't trade down when you have a chance to grab one. You stay put and take him.

The CB Amukamara and OLB Quinn should certainly be included here and taken by Dallas with the #9 Overall because both improve the team talant but you have to go with the OL choice with the 2nd pick.

thank goodness we won that season finale against Philly's 4th stringers.
