ARLINGTON, Texas – Regardless of Sean Lee's status, the NFL and OTAs roll on – “next man up,” as has become a popular phrase around Valley Ranch. At Wednesday’s practice, rookie linebacker Anthony Hitchens stepped in for Lee as the first-team middle linebacker. Hitchens, a weak side linebacker in college, said Tuesday he wouldn’t be ready for the role if the Cowboys played this weekend. One day later, he didn’t back down from the responsibility of preparing.

“I’ve still got to get my alignments down and just play fast and just try to learn as quick as I can,” Hitchens said. “They’re not here to hold my hand and walk me through this stuff, so I’ve got to take a lot of time on my own to learn this playbook.”

“We always want to be able to look at the entire landscape of who’s available to us,” he said. “But we felt like we’ve added some resources to our team at that position – we want to give guys a chance and see what they can do.”
Pressed for specifics aside from Hitchens, who was drafted as a potential backup for Lee, Garrett noted two of his backup middle linebackers from 2013 – both of whom were pressed into service by injuries to the squad.

DeVonte Holloman played some Mike linebacker for us last year, so we would see him working in that spot. Justin Durant has played different spots for us and played different spots in his career,” he said. “But again we want to evaluate what Sean’s situation is first, then we’ll give some other guys an opportunity to get in there and show us what they can do.”

Probably just coach speak. I'm sure they are turning stones.

They wouldn't be doing their jobs if they weren't. It's still early in the offseason, so it makes sense to give the guys you got on the team a chance before seeking out help.

Totally agree, you have to show confidence in your guys but there has to be a plan B, which at the very least would include adding some depth..

I'm glad this happened before they axed Durant. This is precisely the reason I was in favor of him staying.

Worst LBS in over 20 years! I had to go back even before the '91 season to find a worse starting trio at linebacker. Read and weep for yourself:

http://www.footballdb.com/teams/nfl/dallas-cowboys/history

this is even through the horrible seasons of the late 90's and early 2000s. I forgot how underrated and underappreciated Coakley, Godfrey and Nguyen were. give me those 3 on this defense or even a past his prime Zach Thomas, and we are a completely different defense!

Totally agree. Of course, it's why he was here through camp, too. You kind of knew we'd lose somebody. Unbelievable it was Lee, and on the first day of OTAs.

Yep -- but isn't this an opportunity for somebody to emerge? Can't Hollomon be a pleasant surprise or Hitchens exceed expectations? What if Laurence is who they hope he is or Spencer is effective in coming back? Maybe JJ will play and hit more than he thinks and be the safety we have been looking for. Even without Lee can't we get better than last year's disgrace?

I know I'm reaching but part of building a winner is for the unexpected to happen (Richard Sherman). It's hard to be optimistic losing your best player but there a a lot of possibilities for surprises.

Chances are, we're super-pedestrian defensively this year, but, yeah, we do have some guys who have a chance to become difference makers, at least.

Just too many question marks for my liking. And losing our one definite playmaker is a gut punch.

I would look at maybe a guy like Michael Mauti from MIN. He is buried there and could be had for a late pick. May be worth a look. Some injury history as well.
