Despite Attention, Cooper Rush Keeping His Focus On Earning A Roster Spot

“We gave him some work with the twos and he did a nice job with that,” Garrett said. “We moved Kellen Moore to work with the threes, we moved them back again during practice, we just wanted to see how each of those guys responded.”

“The way he prepares at that position gives him great chance to show when he comes into a game-type situation,” said Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones. “I've heard the word 'gamer.' I've heard it mentioned by the coaches in the coaching rooms that, boy, he's a gamer. He's just even better when he gets in a game.”

All of that might be true, but Rush is too smart to think he’s made it. Asked Tuesday if he wanted to compete for the backup job, he kept the focus much closer than that.

“I don’t even really think of it. I’m just so focused on making this 53,” he said. “That’s been my No. 1 goal, and I think staying true to that goal is what’s helping me keep progressing.”

The Cowboys are obviously set with Dak Prescott as the starter at QB, but the 29-year-old Moore, who has thrown only 104 passes in parts of two NFL seasons, is still unproven as a backup option. He's completed 18 of 38 passes for 200 yards in the first two preseason games, including 10-21 for 131 yards in Saturday's 24-19 win over the Colts, but lost a fumble that was returned for a touchdown.

Meanwhile, undrafted rookie Cooper Rush has looked impressive thus far, going 17 of 20 for 196 yards and a touchdown.

Didn't Rush throw for two TDs against the Colts?

Anyways, he's playing better than Trubrinsky right now. Shows better pocket presence and seems to put the ball where it needs to be. The other top QB draft picks have a rocket for an arm. But they are terrible with timing passes and lack the touch to put the ball where only the receiver can catch it.

Deshaun Watson is the worst of the bunch. He can't even hit the side of a barn. He's gonna be a bust. Mark it down.

Kirwin mentioned him today as amongst the better rookie quarterbacks in pre season, of course the other ones he mentioned are 1st rounders.

Speaking strictly for myself, I love the quiet, humble approach that Cooper Rush has assumed. He's concentrating on winning a roster spot and nothing else. It's up to the FO and the staff to make decisions that involve who's to be replaced and who is to be installed as their #2 QB. Rush is wise enough to choose to retain his focus without placing any added pressure on himself to replace Moore. He's simply keeping it real and performing as best he can. What comes as a result of his efforts will eventually take care of itself. He's a very smart young man. ;)

Cooper Rush let his actions on the field do his talking. And due to that I think Moore will be walking.
