Why do we have this Parnell hype? When he played he was OK, its not like he wasnt replaceable .... He still got beat by speed in games and on PFF he and Free graded out almost identical. And Free is no world beater

Because to have a backup come in and play at the same level as a starter is not an easy task to replace, especially on the offensive line. He was a very good backup, and given Free's injury history, we need to be protected at RT

Perfect answer.

Yeah, OT is the one position where I'd like to see us still do something in FA before heading into the draft. I guess the club likes its options there, given that they were stashing OTs for this eventuality last offseason, but it's hard to look at the current backups and have a lot of confidence.

We replace him through the Draft. Free will be fine for at least 2 more years. Weems may already be good enough.

Parnell played well but his skill set wasn't ideal for us. Maybe Weems can be our swing tackle? Drafting an OT this year wouldn't be a bad idea with Free's age/injuries.

sure he is. Got any proof or just hot air?

We don't see him in practice obviously but the last two guys that had the "coaches like him but the fans mock him" tag were Parnell and Ron Leary. The coaching staff has earned the benefit of the doubt at this point IMO.

He got overpaid by Jax. Decent tackle but nothing out of this world. We can find another swing man in the draft. I trust the front office when it comes to drafting o-line as they have been money (3 All Pros say hello)

In a pinch, Zach can always kick out to RT and Berny come in at RG. That's why it does not make sense to spend big on a backup. Draft and develop one in the later rounds.

Yep. You don't pay your swing tackle borderline starter money. Weems or a rookie will do.

I mean there was never a possibility to keep Free and Parnell, even if we extended Parnell while he was still cheap(er). Plus, it would have been pointless to keep them both on the roster. They have the same ceilings. We need to start grooming an eventual starter. Parnell is no spring chicken.

My point was they could have extended Parnell for about 3M per and he would have been the starter this year.

They could have, but then they'd be choosing him over Free. My point is, it was always gonna come down to him or Free. They didn't extend him last year which means they probably already made their decision.

My point is that they had a commodity that other teams probably didn't know much about until he started games in 2014. It seems that the OL coach tried to tell them but Free was Garrett's pet cat.
