Mailbag: Lucky More Involved On Punt Returns? Who Sits When Dez Returns?

Since Cole Beasley was the punt returner solely because the coaches trusted him not muffing punts, who do you think will be handling the punt return duties going forward?

David: I won’t be surprised if Beasley holds onto the job, because I think the staff trusts him despite that mishap. They are loyal, maybe even too loyal. That said, I’d expect Lucky Whitehead will get a look or two this week. As Jason Garett always says, he wants to foster competition at every position as often as possible.

Rob: I still think Beasley has the trust of the coaching staff, but that said, they know Whitehead is capable of making big plays, too. I wouldn’t be surprised if both got opportunities going forward, because Whitehead’s performance against the Giants (six touches on offense and returns, 79 yards) might have given the coaches more confidence that he’ll protect the ball as well as make something happen with it.

I would definitely go conservative on returns. Why try something competitive with the season in the balance. Missionary all the way here, thank you very much.

I can understand this line of thnking, but I also think that, because of Romo's and Bryant's injuries, the team needs everything possible to win. Better offense, defense, special teams, like on punt/kick returns Whitehead improving field position, taking one to the house, etc.

One muff isn't going to cost Beasley the job. Whitehead should get Dunbar's plays/touches. Butler should and will get looks as the #2 wideout with Dez. You'll also still see plays with Williams and Butler on the field without Dez, as they aren't going to overload him his first game back.

I really don't expect much to change, other than Michael probably getting closer to 10 touches this week.

Sorry, was being sarcastic, I would throw everything against the wall for the next few games to try and scrape out a win. No point in holding back now.

What's it going to be then, eh?

So how can you preach "competition" when you are pathologically loyal?

It is like some of our players are on scholarship and unless disaster strikes in a game (either injury or a series of poor outings), you don't see change.

Makes me wonder how this "competition" message means something in practice and how does the game performance factor in?

Just what in the hell are you going to do during the season. You're very unlikely to get better picking up a player from a PS. They've looked at him all year and he beat the others out. I didn't see anyone complaining loudly about that. In fact many have been clamoring for him to play. He has no real game experience to speak of so how do you factor that in.

Perhaps you're speaking in general and not just Lucky but the same things apply. And vet FAs are not really available now.

He's playing the cards in his hand. There is no bluffing.

If you want to complain about his coaching then you'll have to explain the difference between this year and last. For me I can only see coaching to the ability of the players they have to put on the field.

When Romo comes back most of the playbook opens up. If we still suck then I'll join the choir.
