Mailbag: Move Up In Draft? Forgotten Depth?

phmfhlmhhvii7wjwqw6s

Do you foresee any scenario where we could move back into the first round to grab someone the draft that the team thinks is a can't-miss in a position of need?

It's possible but unlikely because our second round pick is pretty late. We'd have to give up our second pick and probably a first from 2020. I don't like that because there is less value when trading future picks.

The only scenario I could see happening is trading a player like Sean Lee plus our second pick to try and steal a first rounder. But I think that' s giving up too much. The more plausible option would be to trade up in the 2nd round.

I don't. I think they will stay where they are and consider Cooper a gift in the first round. Moving up from an economic point of view hurts you down the road and I feel the staff wants to avoid that.

Collins is 2020 free agent we can not afford to resign. I would package him and 58 to see if it would be enough to get into top 10 of the 2nd round.

This is where good ol' JJ may get trigger happy. Lock his scotch up with a combination lock right before the draft. That will keep him busy till the draft is over....:flagwave:

Moving up increases your chances, the draft is a crapshoot. But as we all know it's not where, it's who.
Just don't miss!

Better to trade down, accumulate picks and draft players that can give you the best damn special teams in the league. ;)

you move up if theres a cant miss guy within reach but not to just get anyone..we truly need the 2-7 picks to fill our needs , trading up can hurt 2020 and I rather use that draft to fix any holes we find given all the decisions we might need to make..

Sean Lee has zero value at the moment

What player would we see, at a point in the first round where we are likely to be able to trade up to, would be a "Can't Miss Player at a Position of Need?"

We got our 1st round pick in Cooper. We don't need to be screwing up our drafts over the next few years, just so we can get a guy at 25 to 32 that is a "Can't Miss Player".

Move up in the first means we give up the 2020 first and the 2nd rounder at the very least.

Which, depending on the prospect, could make sense. Hard to say now.

REAL tough to move all the way to the first from where we're drafting.

Trade Tank for a first and a second. Draft a Edge rusher in the 1st and use that extra 2nd rounder to get a TE. You might use that extra 2nd together with the original 2nd rounder to move up in the draft. In this case you would have solved the money problem for Tank, too.

I know Edge rushers are hard to find. And it is not a gimme that the new Edge will be any good in the NFL.

Just a thought.

This draft appears to be deep at DT. Also, TE is a position that tends to fall into the 2nd and 3rd rounds. The Cowboys should be able to stand pat and find a player who can contribute for them. However, based on past experience, the Eagles seem to be cognizant of the Cowboys needs and they seem willing to trade up to disrupt the Cowboys plans. With the Eagles drafting in front of Dallas this year the Cowboys need to keep their board under wraps. I have no idea of the Cowboys actually wanted Dallas Goedert or not but the story was the Eagles move up in front of the Cowboys to select him before the Cowboys did even though the Eagles already had Ertz. To me a second round pick was a lot for a second string TE.

1) Trade B. Jones for a 2nd then package.
2) Stand Pat and crush it from there.

I prefer #2
