DC Mike Nolan to remain on sidelines

With this version of the Dallas defense being one that needs all the help it can muster, I'm glad to see Nolan's on-field presence being continued. After all is said and done, the players haven't yet displayed the effectiveness that is needed defensively. Hopefully, their ongoing improvement will gradually get better with each coming game. Here's also hoping Nolan will be as active as needed to get his players fully prepared and up to the task at hand.

Good. I always felt that coaches in the box don't really get a good feel for the game.

i don't mind so much with OC's such as when the Norv Turner, Enrie Zampese, etc.dod in the booth because they are
X's and O's and feel comfortable with their QBs and head sets and the QB coaches, but i always felt like the better DCs always seem to end up being on the side line from the days of Mike Zimmer, Wade Phillips, to todays cast of Niners Robert Saleh

Vic Fangio when he was DC of Niners' .Chuck Pagano Bears,.. Matt Eberflus Colts, ..Keith Butler Steelers, .Rams Brandon Staley....Don Martindale ravens ..and so forth.

i recall Mike Zimmer once saying that he prefers to being the players faces, to physically correct them and point out directions
and he wants them to feel his intensity and presence.

It's a new system without any training camp, I think he needs to be on the sidelines to look the players in the eye and communicate.

i don't know, this looks like a cosmetic move to forestall rising criticism than anything else. This system has turned some good players into hesitant turnstyles and I'm not sure that Nolan's position in the stadium is going to change things all that much.

His defense gave up 34 points to a completely inept Giants offense last week. He may as well coach from the couch in the cellar. The defense is horrific no matter where Nolan is located.

Cowboys DC Nolan to stay on sideline; McCarthy: 'It's clearly a better operation'

As I've mentioned before, the booth cannot speak directly to the players on the field with the headset helmet. In the booth, Nolan had to send the play to a coach on the sideline who then relayed it to Jaylon.

Note:
This rule definitely was in place for 2018. I have not been able to absolutely verify that it has not changed, but from everything I can find it appears to remain in place.

Originally the NFL comm system forced this to be the process regardless of rule; however, in 2016 they rolled a completely new comm system that supported direct booth to player communication but as of 2018 the rule remained in place and appears to remain in place now.

how is cover 2 a new system?

It is new to the Cowboys with regard to being the base defense.

The Cowboys the past several years have been a single-high defense.

The DL scheme is definitely different than Marinelli's.
