(Editor’s Note: With just one month until the start of the 2016 NFL Draft on April 28, the staff of DallasCowboys.com intends to preview the landscape of possible Cowboys draft picks – from the top of the first round to the bottom of the talent pool. Today’s featured player is Notre Dame running back C.J. Prosise.)

Name: C.J. Prosise

Position: Running Back

College: Notre Dame

Height/Weight: 6-0/220

Honors: A year after Notre Dame named him its 2014 Special Teams Player of the Year, Prosise made the semifinalist list for the Maxwell Award which recognizes the nation’s best college football player.

Key Stat: Prosise switched from receiver to running back in his final college season and made nine starts, rushing for 1,032 yards on 156 carries (6.6 average) with 11 touchdowns. In two previous seasons with the Fighting Irish, he started nine games at wide receiver and caught 36 passes for 588 yards and two touchdowns.

Where He’s Projected: Many mock drafts list Prosise among the top half-dozen or so running back draft prospects this year and project him as a possible third- or fourth-round pick.

How He Helps the Cowboys: Signing Alfred Morris and re-signing Lance Dunbar doesn’t preclude the Cowboys from possibly drafting a young running back for depth behind last year’s starter Darren McFadden. Dunbar is recovering from last year’s knee injury and might start the 2016 season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Prosise is still learning the nuances of the running back position, but he was a playmaker for the Irish last season at his new position and he has breakaway-type speed – he ran a 4.48 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine in February. His past receiver experience makes him a versatile option out of the backfield, though he might fit best as a change-of-pace back for a team early in his NFL career as he gathers more experience.

Top 5 back upside IMO

Raw however may have a hard time seeing the field as a rookie. Depends on how fast he learns in camp.

A cross betweek Yeldon and Abdullah IMO. Or a bigger strong Gio Bernard

Prosise has good size and speed so thats hopeful.
One year experience sounds good and bad.
He make not be so helpful this year,I don't know.
A fourth rd pick OK

I just read Leadbelly, fumbler ? not good

4th round is where I would take him. Preferably comp pick. I think he could seriously develope into a Pro Bowl back, but he would be less effective then Abdullah was in Detroit last year as a rookie. And Abdullah was pretty worthless

I'm on board with him if hes taken in the 4th. Doubt he's there for the comp pick. His change of direction drill numbers were pretty crappy but he's got good size/burst/speed and looks really good on film.

I'm not really a fan of any of the RBs they are bringing in besides Zeke. Dixon and Booker are my RB2 and RB3. Both have workhorse capabilities and do it all skill sets as well as fitting this scheme very well. Pretty disappointed neither is on the list or at least that we know of.

4th round is where I might go for him. You are banking on his potential. To run for 1,000 yards having never played TB before is pretty impressive, granted ND had a very, very good OL.

But he has his warts. He does have a small case of the fumbles but maybe that gets better as he gets more reps at TB. On the flipside, he's decent in pass protection, again for only having played TB for one season, and he's an excellent receiver.

What's it going to be then, eh?

He'd be very far back on my list. Fumbler. He'd be a big step up from Dunbar though.

Then take a similar jitterbug like Paul Perkins who does not have a fumbling problem. They are likely to be available around the same juncture.

I think he was really good last year. He had the knack of getting extra yards. He sort of glides out there.

With that being said, he hasn't played the position long and got dinged last year. I would have liked to see another year of him in college to see if he can handle the workload.

It is quite remarkable if ND didn't have one of their younger backs transfer and then the starter got hurt in first game, CJ probably would not have had many chances last year.

If you want the stronger back, it's probably Prosise. If you are concerned with fumbles, Perkins likely would be the choice.

Prosise does have a lot of potential. For a first year running back (he did run a number of jet sweeps in 2014, most notably in the Music City Bowl for a TD), he showed very good run skills and instincts. He is very smooth as a runner, has a nice spin move, and is a very good option out of the backfield as a receiver. He's also an excellent special teams player. His fumble stats last year are a little disconcerting (averaged a fumble for every 36 touches), and he does have small hands. His ability to pick up the blitz is also a huge question mark. Prosise in the fourth makes a lot of sense, but earlier than that is a bit of a reach based on how much he has to learn about being a RB.

Much rather take the project with potential. We are in a good position to do that. We have a serviceable group of 3 that can get by as is. Need to hit a home run on a mid/late round project to really give the team the boost it needs and someone that everyone feels good about running behind the oline. Early picks on defense and/or qb are too important. Can fall back to using a high pick on RB in next year's deep class if necessary.
