(Editor’s Note: DallasCowboys.com senior writer and pro wrestling aficionado Rob Phillips’ new column, “Figure 4,” identifies four key statistics each week that impact the Cowboys’ on-field performance.)

FRISCO, Texas – Anytime a team wins more games than it lost, there’s at least some good in there, even if it’s hard to see three days after a season reaches the bitter end.

Yet, the Cowboys (9-7) will face some difficult self-evaluation over the coming weeks. Why aren’t they playing in January?

“Ultimately it was not good enough,” head coach Jason Garrett said Tuesday.

Specifically, it wasn’t good enough in the games without three All-Pro caliber players. The Cowboys went 3-3 without running back Ezekiel Elliott, 1-5 without linebacker Sean Lee (counting the final three-plus quarters he missed in Week 10 against the Falcons) and 1-3 without left tackle Tyron Smith (counting the final three-plus quarters he missed in Week 16 against the Seahawks).

This week in the stats column, we’re taking a closer look at what went well, what didn’t go well, and what can improve on offense and defense:

1. Offense: A Dominant Stretch

I view the offense’s performance like our podcast structure here on DallasCowboys.com: broken down into three segments.

I think on the offensive point #2 ,throwing in something about the 3 game losses in a 12 day span would've added a certain 'illustrating' clout to the article & on the defensive point #2, ending the season with a top ten defense(#8 overall) yet having a #29th ranking on 3rd down defensive stops makes for some 'fuzzy factoring' at least to me,as a brief summary as to how a top ten D is among the top ten when they are at the bottom of stopping opposing offenses of picking up that first down .

To be honest, I enjoyed reading that ' 7 sack David Irving' article at the bottom of the page more,,,o_O

1-4 should be coaching, game preparation, game management, and scheming mismatches.
Our talent isn't the best in the league but it's well good enough to still be playing this year

Dak is not a huge problem Dak is in his 2nd year learning the pro game.
Dak however has to bring it all together this off season cause 2018 is a big year for him and the whole organization
He can't throw. A QB that can't throw is a problem.

26th, 25th, 27th, and 15th in the league in points allowed on defense...

Good call on this. I was going to point out the same thing.

It's yet another clear indicator of how truly average this team and its staff are. Once again, they can succeed against the bottom half of the league, but when facing the top half? They struggle.

That's why they can't beat winning teams in either the regular season or the playoffs. And why thecoach is a .500 guy after 7 years. And why this team is sitting out the playoffs yet again.

The epitome of mediocrity.
