(Editor’s Note: With the offseason practices now complete, the Cowboys will take some downtime before departing for training camp on July 28. Until then, let’s focus on some of the more unknown rookies on this team, fighting for a roster spot. Today’s featured player is wide receiver George Farmer.)

ap850789033099_2.jpg

Name: George Farmer
Position: Wide Receiver
College: USC
Height/Weight: 6-1 / 220
Acquired: Undrafted Free Agent

Collegiate Career: Farmer arrived at USC with great expectations as the nation’s No. 1 high school receiver recruit out of Junipero Serra (Gardena, Calif.). He appeared in only 24 games in three seasons for the Trojans, however, playing sparingly his first two years and then redshirting in 2013 due to a knee injury. Farmer returned healthy for his junior year and finally cracked the starting lineup four times, tallying 25 catches for 314 yards. With a 4.35 40-yard dash time at his Pro Day, Farmer showed scouts he’s got NFL speed.

Did You Know? His father, George, played in the NFL for the Rams and Dolphins.

2015 Outlook: The Cowboys signed four other rookie free agent receivers to compete for a backup receiver spot left by the departing Dwayne Harris: Lucky Whitehead, DeontayGreenberry, Nick Harwell and Antwan Goodley. Farmer received a large signing bonus for an undrafted player ($15,000), so clearly the Cowboys saw the natural ability that made him a blue chip high school prospect. But he’ll have to separate himself as a pass-catcher and special teams contributorwith kick return experience. He began to stand out in minicamp, catching four passes from Brandon Weeden in a single series.

Scout’s Take: Nice size for the position. Not much initial quickness or power off the line when facing the press. Will come back to the ball. Works to get open. Can take his route across the middle and make the contested catch. Will need some serious work on his routes. Able to adjust to the ball down the middle of the field. Will go get the ball. Not as much separation for his speed. – Bryan Broaddus

Other than Collins, of course, this was my pet cat of the undrafted rookies we signed. He has a lot of ability, just needs to put it together... it's going to be really hard though with the players we have already. He'll have to show some special teams worth I think to land a spot. I'm pulling for him to make this team and contribute in some way, uphill battle all the way though.

Also kinda routing for Lucky Whitehead, but that is solely based on name value only, ha ha.

Isaiah Stanback.............no thank you.

Stanback was a quarterback in college.

I suspect Farmer will be a practice squad player, but one they have high hopes for with a year's development.

I know.

He wasn't here............I wasn't comparing him to a position.

I was comparing Dallas' penchant for holding on to solid athletes/not necessarily football players far too long.

Wastes real estate on the roster. IMO.

Agreed.

The nice thing now is, with a roster now looking a lot deeper, you can cut these types without fearing that you'll rue the day later. Before, it was hard to cut the injury guys because their potential was so much greater than what was on the 53.

Happening less and acquiring less but there's always going to be coaches trying to coach up and look for a place for these guys to live on grass. Some just can't stay healthy and/or play football as well as you'd like.

This guys more than an athlete. He went from top of the USC depth chart to the bottom because of injuries.

True enough, job.

............and every time we turned around Stanback was on the sidelines.....injured. There were several more guys jerry just had to have, that were roster spot speds, they kept for far too long, IMO..

They are athletes that don't have football bodies or speed freaks that can't run a route, catch a ball or take a hit.. JMO

Like a couple of guys have said, Dallas pretty much doesn't really hang on to pipe dreams anymore................Jason Garrett is putting a pretty decent product on the field with the help of Stephen and his guys. RKG................I believe?

Oh and for the record I am NOT relegating this kid to anything. Just voicing my opinion that Dallas doesn't revert back to what I've talked about. I WANT the kid to make the team......means he's a football player.

I guess you would have cut Michael Irvin.

I'll be specific: Whoever returns kicks/punts the best will likely be the winner of that last WR spot.

Never really understood the pet cat thing... I think it's one thing if you've been following a guy throughout his college or high school days, or if you know him personally... but other than that, whoever can perform in the NFL is my pet cat. :)

Anyway, it's going to be tough for Farmer to make the roster I think. He's gonna have to prove himself on special teams. Also, I get the impression that he's a bit of an underachiever type... #1 high school WR prospect in the nation, but played sparingly his first 2 years at USC? I don't know... this article mentions he was injured his 3rd year, but what about his first 2? Barring injury, I imagine that even as a freshman or sophomore, a blue chip recruit is going to get at least a decent amount of playing time. Maybe he was hobbled with injury those years, I don't know... but if not, that just seems like a bit of a red flag to me.

Even if he doesn't make the 53, I would think that he'd at least be a lock for the practice squad considering that bonus.
