IRVING, Texas – A few leftover notes from my study of the win against Houston. This is my last look back at Week 5 before we put the focus on the Week 6 matchup in Seattle.

  • I really liked what I saw from Travis Frederick in this game against the Texans. Along withRonald Leary, I thought they were the two best offensive linemen in the game in the way they played. It was another game where Frederick had to handle a nose man and he was more than up to the task of having to dealing with the size and power of Ryan Pickett and Jerrell Powe. Where Frederick was also able to shine was when he had to reach those two when they lined up off his nose and in the gap. There were several snaps where he was able to make his snap and reach play side, which gave DeMarco Murray a nice little crease between him and the guards to run the ball. He was also instrumental in keeping an eye on J.J. Watt and keeping him in check.
  • It is clear that Rod Marinelli is more aggressive in the way he calls the game in relation to what we saw from Monte Kiffin in 2013 -- but that also might be due to the skill level of the players that are currently on the field. Marinelli’s plan in this last game was to make Ryan Fitzpatrick have to deal with linebacker and secondary blitzes, but all the while covering those gaps by dropping linemen into coverage. Marinelli took advantage of the situation knowing that the Texans struggled with their protections along the offensive line and with their backs. He created hits on Fitzpatrick with Rolando McClain and J.J. Wilcox early in the game, which I believe affected the way he played. He later brought Orlando Scandrick on a slot blitz that resulted in a deflected pass. On tape, you can differently tell that while Fitzpatrick was in the pocket, he was concerned with the pressure and you saw him trying to throw the ball more quickly. He wasn’t as accurate as a result. I believe it is this type of mix that we have seen from Marinelli that has allowed this defense to play better overall.

Mincey was a good pick up, like to see Lawrence and Spencer playing well at end so Mincey could play more snaps inside.

Mincey has been a nice surprise (considering Lawrence was expected to beat him out eventually) but T. McClain and Melton need to start making more plays from the interior if this defense is to improve.

I expect the defense to be substantially better once everyone is healthy.

Mincey has some swag to his demeanor too. He doesn't think all "oozy". He has a winners mentality. I like that.

If Lawrence was looking better than Mincey with just a week or two of training camp under his belt then we hit the jackpot. Mincey has been solid and it's encouraging to hear that Lawrence was outplaying him early in camp.

Can't wait to see him play.

I was hard on him. He's not quite the bum I figured him to be. He hasn't quit and plays hard...up to this point. But he's still JAG and provides no impact plays. Most games I don't even notice him on the field. That's not what you want out of your starting rush end.

Mincey was a good pickup.

And considering how many bad-mouthed the signing and then doubly bad-mouthed it during training camp when Mincey didn't look like he was doing much.

Well Mincey has looked good.

Mincey played very well down the stretch and in the playoffs for DEN last year and I was very happy with the signing.

"But he's still JAG and provides no impact plays."

IMO the 3rd down hit on Fitzpatrick in OT qualifies as an impact play.
