IRVING, Texas – Some leftover observations from the tape of the Cowboys’ win against Houston. Some of this is simple grading from having studied the film, but there’s something about the Cowboys...

  • In my post game notes from Sunday’s game, I wrote about how well I thought this Cowboys offensive line did in handling J.J. Watt for the balance of the day and how he was not a major factor in its outcome.

What we knew coming into this matchup was that Watt was going to have an opportunity to take a shot at rushing all up and down this line until they felt like they could find a favorable matchup. On the Cowboys’ opening offensive snap, Watt was lined up across from Ronald Leary and beat him with a quick arm-over move tackling, DeMarco Murray for no gain. As bad as that play was for Leary, it was the last time that Watt would sniff the ball while matched up with him one-on-one in the game.

Watt had no answer for Leary when it came to trying to rush him. Leary’s technique was outstanding and his ability to sit down on Watt and neutralize him with power was impressive –particularly because of how much upper body strength that he plays with. It is rare that you see a pass blocker show the ability to stay in front of Watt and keep him along the line of scrimmage, but that’s exactly what Leary was able to do to Watt.

The matchup was so tough for Watt that the Texans defensive coaches moved him away from Leary and took their chances with Tyron Smith to try and get him home on the rush.

  • As amazing as Dez Bryant’s 37-yard reception in overtime to set up the game winning field goal was, the play that Tony Romo was able to make to Terrance Williams might have even been better.

Props to Leary, like a pro he went out and beat Watt consistently, and didn't let the "hype" ( well deserved though) get to him

Leary is the new Koiser. That guy you dont talk about, but goes out and performs

Yeah he's overshadowed by the three #1's but Leary has been really good. He also stoned Aaron Donald two weeks ago every time he lined up against him.

JJ Watt 4 tackles, 0 sacks, 0 passes defensed. Enough said, but kudos to Romo on what I believe was the play of the game. Who knows how different it would have gone if he doesn't juke Watt.

With the game Foster had its encouraging to read that Bishop and Coleman will hopefully be active against Seatle

I remember when teams were try and line up their best pass rushers against our guards. Specifically the Giants.

Feels good knowing you can't exploit that anymore.

Some of this is simple grading from having studied the film, but there’s something about the Cowboys’ defensive tackle rotation that I’d keep an eye on as we go forward with the season.

Here are the my main impressions from the game:

various:
the most impressive OL to me were Free and Leary.
that's insane because those are the 3 "normal" OL.
that interior as a group has to be in the argument for the best in football.

dl wise i see about 5 or 6 average NFL players and a couple slightly below average.
but that is a testament to the pro scouting guys, and the coaches.
it's taken a lot of churning and a lot of trial by fire to get to that mediocre level.
if DLaw can provide r1 type impact that group looks good moving forward.

the lb have been really good. we've been able to manage injuries because hitchens and wilber have provided NFL caliber depth.
it would be really nice to see these guys catch some breaks on health.
i'd be all for resigning durant after this year.
for a guy making less than 1.5m that dude can play.

the play by romo to lose watt was ridiculous personal wizardry but the better play imo was definitely beating the blitz and the best man defender on the texans for a deep pass.
it took a great while hurried pass and a beyond great catch. joseph is an 11m corner and the second highest paid texan.
as good as romo's spin was once he tossed off watt he had twill all alone in the end zone on what wasn't a tough throw or catch.

I think Broaddus is just giving his opinion that Bishop or Coleman should play. The coaches might or might not agree.

I was disappointed that Bishop was not active against the Texans. He's very solid against the run and taking on double-teams.

Terrell McClain looks better right now pass rushing than he does in run defense. They've already got Crawford and Melton playing the 3-tech which puts McClain at the 1-tech most of the time. If something happened with Crawford or Melton, I like McClain as a backup 3-tech, but as a 1-tech I prefer Bishop.

Yeah, the variables at DT are interesting.

All I would expect to see continuing on into next season is Crawford playing most at DT, and the Cowboys giving the two kids (Coleman & Bishop) every opportunity to continue improving.

All the rest of the DTs... They could all be gone by the start of next season... Not saying they all will, but it wouldn't shock me either.

They are getting a good rotation with the DL. This was what they said before last year, before all the injuries started.
In TC in 2013, Kiffin said, we want out defense to be like the Seahawks. Look at them, and that's what our plan is. Then injuries hit.

So now this year, even though maybe an overall lack of big time players, but as I heard on the radio. This is a defense where the sum is greater than the whole.
The parts add up better as a unit than individually. And that is showing.
