FRISCO, Texas – Stuff we can learn hanging around The Star, OTAs, Cowboys U and whatever else goes on around here during the offseason.

This was a strange sight: During special teams practice, specifically punt coverage, No. 58 was lining up wide left as one of the outside gunners going down covering punts. Normally, that’s like a cornerback or safety, maybe a wide receiver and in some rare instances a third string running back. But come on, a defensive end, 6-4, 260? Seriously?

Yep, I am, that 58 being Damontre Moore, the fifth-year free agent the Cowboys signed to a two-year, $1.65 million contract, including a $100,000 signing bonus. In other words, a prove-it deal. And so far the former third-round choice of the New York Giants is getting every chance to prove he belongs in this league after being released by the Giants during his third year, then playing three games with Miami, having worked out last summer for the Cowboys and eventually signing on for four games with Seattle late in the 2016 season.

OK, I apologize to the other writer who said Damontre Moore was lining up at gunner on the punt coverage team.

Mickey... always trying to set expectations for the fan base (Jaylon).

I needed a grand total of nobody to tell me we won't know much about Jaylon until the pads come on. As if that is some big revelation that he came to and Marinelli confirmed it.

I mean who didn't think we wouldn't know much until pads? Anyone?

Ya he also wasn't so folksy this time in his write up.

It appears we really added talent this season plus
the 16 draft talent finally getting on the field. [Not the subject of this article I know]
Is Moore's speed a straight line speed with little bend?

At least we can tell everything about Switzer without pads.

“He’s got it all. He’s mentally tough. He’s got great explosive speed, good hands, good eyes, very smart, knock your head off, can play the corner, can press, can play off, can play the safety, can play the nickel, very personal, will be great playing special teams. He’s real. He’s a football player, he’s just a football player.”

Ask for more …

“He’s got an NFL body, he’s got an NFL mind,” Leavitt says. “He’s got humility, but he’s got confidence. He knows how to act as a pro.”
I know there is a lot of homer in that statement from Jim Leavitt, but damn that sounds good!

Never heard of Tyron's nickname. But it is fantastic. Hotel California. Brilliant!

For sake of accuracy, for which Mickey has never been a stickler, Leavitt coached at the University of South Florida (Bulls), not the University of Central Florida (Knights). Thank you and good day.

I'll be looking forward to seeing Damontre Moore playing gunner on the punt team. That's a plus if he's actually that good at it. He's also making a bit hit, according to reports, as a pass rusher on the right side. Looks like the pressure from our "rushmen" might very well be able to accelerate significantly. Hopefully, these good reports will continue once the pads come on. Anyway, for now, things are definitely looking up. Good stuff.

LP is the oldest guy on the roster? Wow, that sure snuck up on me. We have been blessed with fantastic long snappers, and it looks like it is time to find the next one soon.

And usually, it is his worthless homeristic takes and for purists, his poor writing.

Seriously? How many times does he use that as a transposition tool that registers zero on the effect scale?

Alex I think Spag's has been reading this forum and taken your same exact stance.......

Marinelli's comment pretty much sums it up:

"A lot of it is going to be answered for us with pads. That's where it all comes down. This is Step 1, but Step 2 is a huge step for anybody. It's a grind in camp and then it's the physical contact. That's when you start putting a lot of pressure on your feet and your ankles and your legs. Pads are everything because now it's bone on bone, it's weight on weight. It's all of those things. He's going through Stage 1 here, and it's good stuff so far. Step by step, progress and try not to seem more than it is. It's just progress."
