I saw something similar to this. This is going pretty under the radar next to the doom and gloom that is the rest of the injuries on this team.

Who expected Spencer to be the one player of all the Medical Men (what I now call the oft-injured Cowboys) to step up to the plate, work as hard as he can and actually make significant progress above and beyond expectations to possibly be there and rushing the opposing QB Week 1?

I didn't expect it and there he is doing his thing- getting stronger, trying to get his career back and proving people wrong.
It still might all fall apart, but I am darn proud of the effort he is producing to get himself ready after a catastrophic injury/surgery that ends many careers.

I'm not saying he will ever be as productive as he was (some will obviously argue that he was never very productive- I know you folk, don't bother reminding me of your opinion. I don't care), but I do admire that he's not giving up. He's not taking the easy route. He's working hard and I respect that. I want this guy to succeed. It only helps not only himself, but our beloved team also.

Especially as someone who doubted we'd have a chance to even have this conversation- I'm happy with this report.

The thing with Spencer's position on the defense, it's the easiest one on the defense to do... Simply rush up the field (while trying to maintain gap discipline). And he's always been good with his gap assignments. He no longer has to defend against the pass which is a win.

Heck if he can go out and give the defense 10 snaps vs SF... I'm sure they would taken them.

I would think that if his knee was going to be a problem there would have been indications of it by now.

SPencer is such an interesting story that is going underreported. He was BOSS in 2012, then amid high expectations his health deteriorated so fast last year. Knee injury came out of no where. Now he is coming back faster than ever when it was questionable if he could even play again, much less this quickly/

IRVING, Texas – Anthony Spencer still hopes to avoid the physically unable to perform list when the season begins, even if he’s not ready for the season opener.

Owner/general manager Jerry Jones expressed optimism at training camp that Spencer wouldn’t need to go on PUP, and Spencer said it’s his goal to avoid having to do that.

“Yeah, I want to be out on the field as soon as possible, and PUP will put me out six weeks,” Spencer said. “I haven’t plateaued yet. My body’s responding well to the things that we’re doing, so we’re just going to continue to do them.”

The Cowboys could use as many healthy defensive linemen as possible, and Spencer’s had the most productive career of the group.

Still, with a need at the position, giving an active roster spot to a player who may not be available for a few games is a risky move. Spencer hasn’t put a specific date or a timetable on his return, but he continues to progress and hopes he’ll be ready early on.

“They just said we’ll keep evaluating and see where we are,” he said. “Keep doing the things we’ve been doing and adding a little bit more, a little bit more, and changing what we do with the change of direction, more my body weight, a little bit more resistance. We’re just doing a bunch of different things to see how it reacts.”

Spencer is to be commended for his inspired determination to make it back onto the roster. Nevertheless, at some point, he'll be obliged to provide not only his presence on the field but recognizable ability to perform effectively. If he's able to do that, hats off to him and welcome back. If not, certainly the PUP unit is the best place for him until everything is right to award him a roster spot.

Increased odds with two players being considered, I cannot wait until Jerry places that trophy next to the ones they dust regularly, who now have become lonely and despondent.
