This column runs in Star Mag every week. I really enjoy it.
Some of the thoughts that run through an oversized, BALD HEAD
by Jeff Sullivan
Just reread this column and there's some negativity for a team that's 2-1. More is expected than beating a pair of 0-3 teams in Tampa and Carolina. For me, this is an elite team, one of six or seven that has a legitimate chance come January. Not going to skip and dance the night fandango because of two lackluster-at-best wins.
Yes, we live in world where criticism sells, unwarranted or not. However, are Cowboys fans serious with this Tony Romo nonsense? The kid is 29-13 as a starter. Come on, stop for a second and read that again. 29-13.
Trivia time: Name the six tight ends in NFL history with five consecutive seasons with at least 60 receptions.
Dallas 24, Denver 13 ... The Broncos aren't that good, trust me.
Not thrilled with Patrick Crayton running out of bounds rather than initiating contact with the Carolina punter early in the third quarter. This team needs attitude, they need someone to ... in the words of Mike Tyson, "Everyone has a plan until someone gets hit in the mouth."
The Cowboys need to hit someone in the mouth.
It's time to pull the plug on Flozell Adams. Few offensive linemen have contributed more to the franchise and he should be remembered fondly, but no more. The penalties are just too much and he's no longer dominant in pass blocking.
Second quarter, third down and 16 yards, a quarterback battling his own demons with no confidence, yet the Cowboys somehow allow the Panthers a first down on a 17-yard draw play to DeAngelo Williams.
Next play, after nearly 143 minutes of football in 2009, the Cowboys finally registered a turnover, a Mike Jenkins interception. Five minutes into the third, the sack streak ended via Jay Ratliff's one-handed take down of Jake Delhomme. Carolina didn't have a second-half first down until inside of six minutes in the fourth quarter. Ensuing play was Terence Newman's interception return for a touchdown.
Who names their kid Captain? Then again, the seventh-round rookie shut down Roy Williams as if he were Deion Sanders in his prime.
What about rookie kickoff specialist David Buehler with seven touchbacks in 17 kickoffs this year? That's tied for the league lead.
While fantasy football owners were thrilled with Jason Witten's eight receptions for 71 yards in the first half, it says something about Romo's dependency on him that the offense mustered zero points those first 30 minutes.
How cool is this: Felix Jones became the first running back to rush for 400 career yards in less than 50 attempts since Bo Jackson in 1987.
Could live to be 147 years old and it's hard to comprehend seeing a better athlete than Bo.
Why would anyone care what Tony Dorsett or Emmitt Smith thinks about a quarterback? Are we that desperate as a media society for negativity, no matter the source? If they want to talk running backs, let me know.
Since starting last season 10-0, the Tennessee Titans are 3-7 including their playoff loss. Absolutely amazing how quickly fortunes in the NFL are altered. Division winners from a season ago, Tennessee, Miami and Carolina, are each 0-3.
The media and Joe Fan needs to chill about Detroit making a mistake in drafting Matthew Stafford over Mark Sanchez. It's three games and both kids look legit.
Brett Favre played for three teams and retired twice since the Lions last win before Sunday.
Is there anyone still doubting the Cowboys decision to cut ties with Terrell Owens? He's about to sabotage his fourth franchise in seven years and is as explosive in the passing game these days as Homer Simpson.
What we learned from Week 3: Tampa is absolutely brutal, although not in the zip code of the area code of Cleveland ... Steelers WR Limas Sweed needs to go bye-bye ... Former No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell not only doesn't get it, but he could care less about finding it. A complete and utter waste of physical talent ... When S Bob Sanders and WR Anthony Gonzalez come back for Indy in a few weeks, the Colts could be the best team in football.
• Jon Gruden is brilliant in the booth.
• Been noticing the Mohawk has been making a comeback of late ... shame.
Trivia answer: Ben Coates, Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, Shannon Sharpe, Jason Witten and Frank Wycheck.
