OPPONENT PREVIEW - GREEN BAY
Uncertain Packers Rely on Rodgers, Passing Game

Although there has been a good deal of uncertainty about the Green Bay Packers this year, they still appear to be a reasonable bet to make the playoffs for the 13th time in the last 18 seasons.

The uncertainty comes from the fact that just about every time they have lined up, the outcome was in doubt right up until the last commercial was shown. In the first seven games that the Packers played, six were decided by seven points or less. And five had been determined by four points or fewer.

They have lost by three to Chicago, Washington and Miami. They beat Detroit by two and Minnesota by four.

The Packers, therefore, have been living on the edge and their numbers show that.

Green Bay has produced only slightly more yards than has the opposition and has fewer first downs. The Packers have a minus-1 turnover ratio. They have done a better job getting into the end zone than the other guys, but those figures are skewed by their one blowout victory of the season, a 34-7 decision over Buffalo.

Even quarterback Aaron Rodgers has not been playing up to his usual form, although the Packers do rank eighth in the NFL in passing. Rodgers is hovering in the lower half of the top 10 this season, seemingly just a little off the boil. He has thrown a dozen touchdown passes and that is certainly a worthwhile number, but only three quarterbacks - Eli Manning, Drew Brees and Brett Favre - have thrown more interceptions...

(now in my own words)

It has been up to Rogers, and both Jennings and Driver to produce most of their offense.

Green Bay has the fifth worst rushing offense in the league. The lead runner for them, Brandon Jackson, is only the 20th leading rusher in the league.

The Green Bay defense is middle of the road in most categories.
