With the exception of a few hiccups, the Cowboys of recent vintage have been steady and sometimes spectacular on defense. Over the last two seasons they've been excellent at stuffing the run and keeping their team in games. Last year the defense yielded 250 points, second-fewest in the league, and placed ninth in yardage allowed (5,064).
Now for the next step in the unit's evolution: more turnovers and big plays.
"We had some shutouts, we did some good things last year," inside linebacker Bradie James says. "The only thing we didn't do that we can improve on is getting turnovers. You can't have it all, but that's what we can get better at."
Turnovers are momentum-changers that provide field position for the offense and occasionally result in touchdowns. They're emotionally uplifting when you get one and simultaneously deflating to the opposition.
One of the factors contributing to the team's rough beginning: zero turnovers through their first two games. That was in keeping with their recent history.
During the past two seasons, the Cowboys were able to generate 43 turnovers, tying them with the Denver Broncos for the second-fewest over that stretch. The low number was 36 by the Washington Commanders.
Dallas managed 21 takeways in 2009, tied for 27th in the NFL. Its 11 interceptions were good for a 26th-place tie, with Pro Bowl cornerbacks Mike Jenkins and Terence Newman combining for eight.
Still, the Cowboys were able to beat the odds and secure a spot in the playoffs before they eventually were eliminated in Minneapolis...
