Tues. Practice Recap: CBs Jones, Carr Return; Claiborne Expects To Play
Tuesday, August 25, 2015 9:24 PM CDT
By DallasCowboys.com Report

OXNARD, Calif. – At the start of Tuesday’s afternoon practice, the Cowboys put their cornerback depth on display as the position looked to be at full strength for the first time in several weeks.

Now it appears that depth will be put to the test after Orlando Scandrick’s knee injury.

While replacing Scandrick in the slot will be quite a chore, a spot likely to be field right away by Tyler Patmon, the Cowboys got a few other corners back on the field, including first-round pick Byron Jones.

After missing a week with a shoulder injury that required an MRI and second opinion, Jones was back in pads Tuesday and even got an interception in team period.

"And the same goes for Morris Claiborne, who hasn’t played in a preseason game since his rookie year of 2012 after missing these first two of 2015. But Claiborne said, “I should be a go this week. It’s been very hard but I’ve channeled that energy. I haven’t been worried about anything since I came back. I see no reason to start now.”

Shocking- honestly I think we hear something around the game time or the day before that "he is being held out by the coaches."

Whitehead has been less than impressive. Now he loses the ball again. Let's move on.

He's actually looked good on returns minus the 1 fumble, all they need to do is have him field punts for an entire practice.

As few kickoffs as there are to return now that so many are relegated to the 20-yard line, is it really worthwhile to risk a turnover with someone who appears so mistake prone? Lucky definitely isn't the only one available in this league to handle such chores. I do believe I'd prefer to get someone more reliable with less risk involved. He's also likely too slight in body type to be relied upon to hold up physically throughout a season for such a tough task.

Turnovers are simply too damaging for the slight advantage that might be obtained with someone like Lucky.

So Patmon is taking over slot duties?

I've been on the Patmon bandwagon forever, I think he's gonna eat behind this pass rush.

McFadden held out because of neck stiffness.

LOL. This guy breathes too hard and something gets pulled.

AJ Jenkins intrigues me. Obviously a top talent who just seemed to never get his **** together.

Yep. Jenkins is looking more and more like a real find.

Yep. And McFadden is looking more and more like someone far too injury prone to retain. Roster spots are much too valuable to waste on someone whose career is obviously on life alert. His durability has proven non-existent. Too old, too brittle and too washed up. The waiver wire awaits.

The reality is there isn't any other options, especially with a ceiling like his. Gus Johnson? Nope. Maybe we get lucky and a guy pops free from another team on cut downs but if McFadden is just nursing a neck injury that isn't severe, they'll keep him.

Cole Beasley can return punts no problem so we already have a guy on our roster.

If Whitehead gets cut i'd bet he goes to the practice squad and maybe AJ Jenkins gets that 5th spot.

If they do, they'll more than likely come to regret it. Right now, Gus is looking better all the time.

Impossible to say without knowing what RB you are forgoing to keep him. His roster spot has to go to another RB.

So give me the names. Who are we missing out on that should be on the roster instead of him?

Don't hate on McFadden as I understand it his check is not guaranteed, if he gets hurt in preseason he's done and no $$$$.Wait until it counts he's dodging practice. After Scandrick expect more.I was really proud of Garrett and how he has preserved our health, Scandrick was just bad luck.I kind of actually think the Cowboys had Scandrick questions and had drafted accordingly.Scandrick has some weird domestic situations.Cowboys had to wonder if we needed more CBs glad we have depth this year.

That is yet to be determined, as you well know. Like I said, right now Gus is looking just fine, thanks.

Johnson looks fine? 3.7 ypc and he has a separated shoulder.

There is no chance in hell I dump McFadden for Johnson at this point.
