20 Questions: Veteran Player Entering Training Camp On The Roster Bubble?
Tuesday, July 04, 2017 9:01 AM CDT

The offseason practices are in the rearview mirror as the Cowboys are heading towards training camp, which begins on July 24 in Oxnard, Calif.

That’s usually the place where many of the questions regarding this team start to get answered.

The staff writers at DallasCowboys.com – Rob Phillips, David Helman, Nick Eatman and Bryan Broaddus – are attempting to answer 20 pressing questions as the team gets ready for camp and the 2017 season.

Today, we continue the series discussing which veterans could be pushed in training camp for a roster spot.

Helman: I’ve got my eye on Robert Blanton, the veteran safety the front office signed back in the spring. I don’t necessarily want to bet against him, because he’s experienced. He’s also great on special teams – and we know how highly that’s valued by this coaching staff. But if you look at the numbers, it starts to get interesting. You’re probably not going to keep more than nine or maybe 10 defensive backs on a 53-man roster. Orlando Scandrick, Anthony Brown, Nolan Carroll, Chidobe Awuzie, Jourdan Lewis, Byron Jones and Jeff Heath are all virtually locks to earn roster spots. That means that there’s two or maybe three roster spots up for grabs between the likes of Blanton, Kavon Frazier, Xavier Woods and Marquez White. Of the four guys I mentioned, three of them are youngsters playing on four-year deals. Blanton is a veteran playing on a one-year deal. If he’s going to make the team, he’s going to need to be excellent to beat out the youth movement.

How can there be anyone but Lucky Whitehead #1 on that list? Yet he didn't get mentioned?

I have to think that they all consider his departure a done deal.

I know I do.

I'd put guys with injury issues like Paea, Looney, and Hanna on this list before most of the names they mentioned.

I also give little chance for Alfred Morris staying on this team.

If Lucky is Option #1 to be gone, Morris would have to be Option #1A.

Morris needs injuries to stay and to improve in catching the ball. Not sure he even makes it to TC. Best to release and give him a chance to catch on elsewhere. I hear he's a great guy so he should be treated well IMO.

Whitehead can't beat out Switzer but he may make it to camp as a body. I don't see him making the roster.

Hanna makes the team unless he can't play. We need him as Swaim and Rico don't have experience.

An OL will be gone I just don't know which one. They'll wait for injuries to shake that out unfortunately.

Paea pushes to make the team. Again injuries esp him will say something about it.

As mentioned before, Lucky is gone. The only way he has a chance to be on this team can't be mentioned here so as to not jinx Switzer...

Lucky
Blanton
Morris
They have the biggest risk of unemployment to me because we have younger, cheaper and better options for each

I look at a "bubble" player as someone who may or may not make the team- maybe a 50% shot. Whitehead is 99% gone, so he's beyond the bubble.
