And of course I know nothing about him, but he seems to fit the profile of the guys the Cowboys are throwing at the DL.

Carrington, 26, is 6-foot-5, 301 pounds and is scheme-versatile. Whether the Steelers see him as a starting-level player remains to be seen.

He was playing at a high level in 2012, by all accounts, and poised to have a big contract year in 2013, but an injury during the Bills' Week 3 game put him out the remainder of the season. He's seen as an interior defensive pass rusher, but his size would be beneficial as a 5-technique defensive end in Pittsburgh.

6-5 301 passes the eye test and 26 passes the age test. He ought to be able to sniff out the bad centers at least.

I would absolutely kick the tires on this kid. At the very least he can back up both SDE and DT. He has a great motor and an even better attitude.

I want Gardner in the draft, but I would happily take this kid instead. I want more football players and less athletes just doing their jobs.

I like his size and age, but don't know too much about him other than that.

I'm sure Dallas knows about him, so if they want to take a look, they should have the opportunity now that he didn't sign in Pittsburgh.

If the doctors give him a thumbs up, sign him for the vet minimum and let him fight his way onto the final 53. No big investment in an area we need bodies. Creating competition has always been something I'm a big proponent of.

Is there merit in that? Yeah, there could be if the Cowboys can't close on guys that are better. Sign Melton and Ayers first. If there's money left over then the Cowboys can look at someone like this. But I'd like to see some "quality" on the defensive line before more money is spent on "quantity".

Yeah, they got a couple of guys like this already.

Here's what I got from PFF:

#57 of Top 75 Free Agents
  1. Alex Carrington, Defensive Lineman – Looked set to really test himself as a starter in 2013 before injury ended his year. That means a prove it deal is in his future which could be quite the get for someone.

#8 of Top 10 FA Bargains
Alex Carrington, DL 2013 Grade: N/A
Summary: Carrington is an interesting player in this year’s free agent market in that he has shown some serious potential in the past but missed almost all of 2013 through injury. He seemed to get lost as the Buffalo Bills switched defensive schemes in the past but looked really impressive as an interior pass rusher in 2012, racking up a +9.6 pass rushing grade on limited duty that was bettered by only 11 other defensive tackles. His best fit is likely as an interior pass rusher in passing situations and he makes a lot of sense for any team trying to emulate that aspect of the Super Bowl-winning Seattle Seahawks defense.
Good Fit: Jacksonville, Cleveland, St. Louis

Anyone could coach a Haley or a Ware but this is the kind of guy Marinelli can earn his money on.
