DE Tank Lawrence could get franchised again

If you plan to extend Zeke it should be done now
The reason being age
You don’t want the guy getting the most carries every year being paid till he’s 30
Sign him now so the best years of his career are covered and you can get out at 28-29 yrs old
The odds of Zeke productive past 28 are slim

That's right. If you have to give up Zeke or Tank you say bye to Tank. This team relies on Zeke to tote the rock a majority of the touches for this offense.

This.

Plus he already said he won't play on the tag again.

SJ drop the ball on this. I recall when the DE/DT was signing crazy deals last year. See Mack as the new standard.

Contract: 6 yr(s) / $141,000,000
Average Salary: $23,500,000
Guaranteed at Signing: $60,000,000
Signing Bonus: $34,000,000

The Cowboys can hold onto Tank another year via the Franchise Tag so they have some leverage. It would be nice to sign him to an extension that brings the cap # down from the 2019 Franchise Tag.

Cooper is under contract for 2019. Sign him to a deal that makes sense for both sides, don't feel that you have to get the deal done now.

Dak is under contract for 2019. I guess he could hold out, but one, that doesn't seem like something he'd do and two, what other teams are going to pay big $$$ for him in two years, especially if he sat out 2019?

Byron Jones is also under contract for 2019.

The Cowboys can exercise a 5th year option on Zeke, keeping him under contract through the 2020 season.

I keep saying posters say they must lock them up now or they can't sign anyone now because they need to re-sign their own guys. It's usually good business to extend your guys ahead of time but there's no immediate or urgent need to freak out and sign everyone now. They could easily do what the Rams did and load up for a 2019 run. They can do a little of both, extend guys who aren't trying to break the bank and use some cap room for 1 or 2 impact free agents.

Plus he already said he won't play on the tag again.
Where?

I am not saying you're wrong but I hadn't seen that anywhere. Every time I've ever seen him asked about, he's very diplomatic, saying things like "that's out of my control"

Dak gets 150 million for 5 years.......step away from the ledge......
He doesn’t have to be paid this year. From what I have heard is we have even more cap money next year. Dak signed a four year deal not three

I keep both
I sign Zeke now so I can move on when he’s 28-29
By them he’s gonna be done
Not many can take the carries he gets an last more than a few years
To much wear on the body

If we can afford it, its the smart play. His performance over the final 8 games and playoffs does not justify a khalil Mack size deal.

Fading in the back half of the season, two seasons in a row, is also a red flag.

Talented but not elite DE with injury history 3 years in a row. We're going to overpay him forever because we won't be willing to take the hit on the talent level on the dline for letting him go, while spending all that money is going to keep other talent off the roster, and playing him will keep other talent from developing.

Good player, but the money will always be bad and we're never going to stop spending it on him.
Who said he faded? You?

If he gets tagged, it’s only so they can retain his rights while they continue to negotiate a long term deal.
He won’t play the year on the tag.

Furthermore, the cowboys have more than enough space to extend Dak and Cooper and Sign Lawrence long term.

If the cowboys didn’t sign Lawrence it wouldn’t really be because of the other extensions they need to do, but more likely it would be a sign that Lawrence and his agent out price his worth.

So this is just bad reporting.

Thanks to Le'Veon Bell, the 2nd franchise tag no longer gives a team any leverage. Players can just sit out the entire year. And frankly, any player that will be a highly sought after free agent would be stupid to play a single game if they get a second franchise tag.

Expect that loophole to be closed next CBA.
