DE Tank Lawrence could get franchised again

Thanks to Le'Veon Bell, the 2nd franchise tag no longer gives a team any leverage. Players can just sit out the entire year.

Expect that loophole to be closed next CBA.

I don't think it's a huge issue. Most players aren't willing to walk away from $15 million plus in the prime of their NFL career. Le'Veon is a different dude. Most players unhappy with the Franchise Tag hold out until the deadline date and then show up to get their accrued season in.

Most of the top players don't care about the accrued season any longer.

If he sits out 2019, he'll either be a free agent in 2020 or the Cowboys will have to pay him about $30 million just for 2020 and then he'll be a FA in 2021.

I really like Tank but him disappearing down the stretch and his injury issues are a major concern...I'm honestly not sure if he's worth it now. I think we should have resigned him last year instead of the tag but whatever. Again my biggest issue with him though is disappearing down the stretch, where has he been in big games? Where was he in the playoffs? I don't remember him making plays worth 17+ mil a season in the playoffs.

That's why I think it's better we tagged him last year. His play dropped and hes hurt again.

Yeah, I keep hearing/reading fans state this but don't see any players besides Bell doing this. I think throughout the history of the Franchise Tag, only 2 players have sat out a whole season.

The 2019 tag for DE's is $17.143MM. He'll be 27 next year. Even if he gets a good-sized contract in 2020, he is not likely to recover that $17M.

Again, I'd love to see him sign a long-term deal, especially one that has a less than $17M first year cap hit. I don't feel Tank should get as large a contract as Khalil Mack and Mack's first year cap hit was $13.8M. Mack got a $34M signing bonus and like $90M guaranteed over the length of the contract. That contract scares the hell out of me. I'm okay with the $34M signing bonus (if necessary to get a deal done) but in no way do I want to see that much guaranteed $$.

If he's tagged again he gets 120% of his salary this past season. With the 3rd tag he'd get Top 5 QB money.

Also, it's not about fully recovering the $20 million over the following few years, it's that playing means he's at risk of an injury that insures that is the final $20 million of his career.

It's a safe bet his next contract will guarantee at least $40 million. Do you sit and do nothing and get your guaranteed $40 million or do you play for 20 and risk an injury?

You're right, I was just looking at the expected Franchise Tag in 2019 for DE's.

Tagging him again would bring his one-year salary to $20,571,600 which again, I don't feel too many players are willing to walk away from. I agree with your sentiment that players do not want to be tagged, but that is a ton of money to walk away from.

Yes 20 is a lot. But 40 is a lot more.

You don't see it a lot because usually when they threaten to sit, like Donald and Von Miller, the team caves.
