DE to LB, LB to DT ???

We all know about the hybrid DE/LB's out there ... the Demarcus Ware, Anthony Spencer guys who played DE and have transitioned to LB.

But harken back to the day ... Randy White was drafted as a LB and transitioned into one of the greatest DT's in NFL history.

How did that happen? I'm guessing different time, different era.

I don't expect to see that ever happen again. Even a monster like Ray Lewis would get demolished if he tried to play DT.

It's nothing more than food for thought, but I was really pondering how that happened ...

Randy had very good strengh and knew how to use his hands to get lineman off of him not to mention he was extreamly quick off the snap. I also think playing in the Flex was a big help

Wasn't he a DT in Maryland that Landry thought he could turn into a MLB? Just to move him back to DT the next year?

Randy White was a DE at Maryland. Since the Cowboys already had Ed Jones and Harvey Martin playing end they tried him at MLB. When that didn't work they tried him at DT, voila.

But is still averages out, the lineman both on offense and defense are bigger in today’s game and in Randy day they were bigger than the generation before them but Randy still had to go up against lineman who were bigger than he was.

Traylor was basically eating himself out of the league at LB, the position switch was a necessity that saved his career. The surprising thing was that he was a much better NT than he was ever as a LB.
