Does anybody know just how much dead money will come off the books next offseason? I have read figures approaching 25 million, but that was before the five million penalty. I know a decision on Spencer will have to be made along with some others. Next offseason could be another big free agent haul, or the money could be used to extend Romo, Dez, etc.

Oh the old "dead money is keeping us down" myth.

You do know that we work contracts around that, right?

I think Newman's cut will add a couple mill to the dead-money list... there isn't much else.

However keep in mind the $5 mil penalty could be considered "dead money".

The final part of the Davis, Roy Williams and others will be coming off IIRC. From my understanding, next year will be the last year for most, if not all, of the money that came from releasing these players.

Thanks for sharing the groundbreaking news.

This is what AdamJT13 posted in the "Salary Cap" thread...

Other than players who were designated June 2 releases, there's no dead money for a future season until after June 1 in the previous year, so our only dead money for 2013 so far is $2 million for Terence Newman.

Per AdamJT13, once the team gets back Terence Newman's 2012 base salary ($6.01M) following June 2nd, we will be carrying $29.7 million in dead money for this season.

The number will grow following cuts to something like $31-$33 million depending on who gets Turked.

That's one fourth of the Cowboys' adjusted salary cap.

The only dead money in 2012 right now is for T-New ($2M), but the number will inflate as the roster is paired down before the regular season begins.

No more big cuts are foreseen, the team took care of its last bad contract with Newman.

So we will be getting a lot of cap room back in 2013.

Some of it will be adsorbed by Brandon Carr's new contract, he has a listed $16.3M cap number in 2013 ($14.3M base, $2M signing bonus).

But the team will also be extending Tony Romo in the near future, his listed 2013 cap number is $19.1 million.

That will be lowered.

The team will be able to do whatever it wants in free agency.

That's not at all what he's saying.

The idea that dead money kept us from doing anything is a stupid and pervasive myth that needs to be shattered. Just doing my part.

Thanks. That answers that question.

That's all fine and dandy, but the OP didn't say a word about dead money holding us back. He simply asked how much would be there next year and expressed optimism that we might spend even more money next year. He didn't say anything about it holding us back, considering we spent over 70m this offseason.

Having said that, our cap situation most definitely has held us back. He's just a real sensitive fan who doesn't want the truth talked about.

We sat on our hands last offseason to begin fixing our cap.

The year prior it definitely did, I don't think it was much of a factor this offseason.

As I noted. Useless question. We can spend however we want regardless of "dead" money

Why is this true?

The great thing about the internet is that you don't have to click anything if you think it's useless.

Don't go barging into someone else's thread like a drama queen and attack them for asking a perfectly harmless question because it offends your delicate sensibilities.

Personally, I would also like to know what our dead money and cap situation is going forward

Not useless, just looking ahead. You must not know dead money counts against the cap. I should have known a cap question would confuse you. After all, you were the poster who insisted that many on this board was stupid a few months ago when Mario Williams was hitting free agency. You said the Texans was keeping him even after they stated the cap wouldn't allow it. You might want to lend some insight on cap situations to them considering that you know so much on the subject.

Let's destroy the myth that dead money doesn't mean anything. Nothing could be further from the truth. While it's true it doesn't mean we can't do anything, it certainly does crimp things some. You can't just blow $30 million away. I do think next year we will be able to do a little more. And this year was NOT crippled by the dead money. Just don't try and sell me this song it means nothing.

Agreed, dead money in it's most benign interpretation, is just another use of cap space, although mostly unproductive, by definition. Cap space, is cap space, it's an asset, when you lose it, it's gone.

Terrific, but that has absolutely nothing to do with this thread, Abe... this is about extra cap room being available next year because a large chunk of dead money will be coming off of our cap... so we won't need to engage in too much cap gymnastics to do as we wish in free agency next offseason, there will already be money there for that purpose...

Yes, a savvy team can create cap room when it needs it, but the point is, we won't need to do that next offseason...
