In the 2016 draft, Smith and Jack were picked #34 and #36, respectively. Smith had just suffered a catastrophic knee injury, and Jack was diagnosed with a degenerative knee condition. Both players are linebackers, and both just signed new deals.

Smith’s deal is a 5-year extension worth $64 million with $35.5 million in guarantees. This is an AAV of $12.8 million.

Jack’s deal is a 4-year extension worth $57 million with $33 million in guarantees. This is an AAV of $14.25 million.

Last year, Smith had 121 tackles and 4 sacks. Jack had 107 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Jack had one pick, and Smith returned a fumble for a touchdown.

Smith is coming off the better year and signed for less money per year. This is a win for the Cowboys.

Smith is better than Jack and always was touted as such, since 2015. Jaylon was considered the best LB in the 2016 draft.

Nothing to see here. Except we got a #4 overall talent with the #34 pick, a #34 overall talent at the bottom of the 4th round and a mediocre player with the actual #4 pick.

Smith was brought in to be THE guy, he however looked out of it his first season playing and will never be the brains of the defense. LVE will be that guy, and to be honest, looks like his potential will be better than Smiths. I also would like to point out, Smith played in a Top 10 defense while Jack played in a demoralized defense where multiple players were quitting on the team. Both Smith and Jack seem to be quality players though, just not sure either will be the top 10 talent they were speculated to be before injuries

Smith is the defensive signals caller, so yeah, he's kind of the brains of the defense. You have continually pushed this notion that Smith is some kind of dunce or mentally deficient player out there and that's simply a fabrication.

Because he is a stupid player - and I saw this enough in college and in 2017 when he gets outsmarted presnap - it is no surprise that Smith got better once LVE got into the lineup.

Can you show me when Lee got consistently outsmarted? Not even in his rookie year when he got 2 picks against Manning.

And I wouldn’t be surprised if Smith has a disappointing year this year.

Lol

I'd take either, they're both amongst the best in the league at their position.

I went to Notre Dame. The idea that he was stupid in college is preposterous.

You also keep saying he's stupid in the pros and yet the Cowboys somehow let him call the defensive plays and make adjustments.

This is absurd.

You have zero credibility here.

Someone has to call the plays, and the position he plays is the default for that. Lee was injured and LVE is a rookie, it’s not surprising he was allowed to do it.

You going to Notre Dame means absolutely nothing here. Not a thing. Why would you think this matters? For anecdotes?

theyre both linebackers and will forever be linked due to that draft. Nothing silly about it

Fletcher Cox And Vinny Curry are both defensive lineman from the same draft and Quinn has more sacks. Your point is Curry is way better right?

So I assume LVE is calling the defensive plays this year?

And my going to ND likely means I have seen him more, read more insider reports about the team and their players than you, etc. I can say with 100% certainty that this notion that Jaylon Smith was an idiotic moron on the field is preposterous.

So then we should expect as a 2nd year player and Smith being some kind of mental midget, LVE will call the plays then right? I mean Smith, apparently a total moron, was calling plays as a 2nd year player, so that should be no problem for LVE then right?

He had 2 years to study this defense, he didn’t just begin when he healed. He was in his third season, and yes, I believe LVE will eventually take over.

The comparison here will still be Lee, a young Lee wasn’t as athletic as Smith, he made up for this due to having the mind of a QB - in the 3-4 he was a ballhawk, in the 4-3 and healthy he was an amazing run stopper due to knowing where the play would go presnap. I never saw Lee in either college or the pros completely run to the wrong side than I did during his days at Notre Dame or his 2017 season

And I am also very suspicious of players who have a good season only when other players around them are having their best - that was the Dallas D last year, and I would argue this goes for Jack as well, though to a lesser extent so he followed up his impressive play last year while players around him were quitting.

If you’re going to attempt a roasting, make sure to come with fire.

First of all, who is “Quinn” in this scenario?

Furthermore, assuming you meant “Curry” and not “Quinn,” you’re factually incorrect. Cox is coming off a 10.5 sack year and has 44.5 career sacks. Curry is coming off a 2.5 sack year and has 24.5 career sacks.

Lastly, analogizing the difference between a DT and an EDGE to the difference between a MIKE and a WILL is disingenuous at best. DT and EDGE are not even the same position group.

Do better.

Do you factor in that part of Smith's deal was Jerry partnering with Smith's sunglasses company?

I have often thought that if Jerry were to encourage players to start businesses and he partner with them, he could manage the cap and have players around for years.

Is it breaking he rules?

Maybe. Or, maybe not.
