I know hindsight is 20/20 but try to imgaine yourself draft time last year and knowing what you know about each player pre-draft (measurables, film, etc.)

Which player would you draft at #18 if both players were available in the same draft year and why.

Fight!

Without the knowledge of knowing Decastro's rookie season?

Decastro in a landslide and it's not even close.

Only Fredericks Mom & Dad would choose him over Decastro.

I was never a fan of Decastro. But I think it's probably a tossup. Might go Frederick just based on the idea that center is a more critical position. But decastro isn't some great prospect like the guards were this year - and even they would have fallen lower if this wasn't such an awful draft.

DeCastro, not even close.

DeCastro is more of a natural fit at Guard but at least has the athleticism to play Center offering a certain degree of versatility. I know people feel that Frederick can play more than just center and speculate that he may end up even starting at guard for us, but for the life of me I can't imagine someone as slow as him pulling.

And yet Frederick played C and G in college, playing both positions well.

DeCastro if i'm not mistaken was regarded as the highest rated OG in years.
There must be a catch to your question because the answer should unanimously by DeCastro.

Nope. No catch, I just wanted to see what everyone's opinion was and their reasoning behind it. :)

I think the more interesting comparison would be between Frederick and his former teammates Zeitler and Konz. I've read that when Wisconsin needed the tough yards, they always ran behind Frederick.

The well he was good in college argument isn't much of an endorsement. Everybody in the draft played their position(s) well in college, it's a pre-requisite for getting drafted. It's no secret that NFL defenders are a lot quicker than most collegiate athletes. Time will tell how his college success translates to the next level or if he becomes a victim of his own lack of athleticism.

I thought about that intially but I thought the better debate would be between the two lineman that were both taken in the 1st

I'd be surprised if there is a scout out there that would rank Frederick a better prospect pre-draft than Decastro.

I know Cooper and Warmack were getting off-the-charts grades in the lower to mid 90s (even saw an upper 90 once). But Decastro was getting grades ranging from high 80s to low 90s himself.

Frederick gets graded in the low 70s to low 80s at best.

It's not close. Two or three tiers down from Decastro by the manner that scouts chart the players.

BTW, I still think Frederick is going to be good for us for many years.

When I look at the Fredrick pick, I look at the addition of T. Williams. Now, at the 18th spot I wouldn't take any of them. Hence, we moved down this year. Also Decastro was drafted 24th last year when everyone was pumping him out to be a Top-10 lock. One in a life time gem. I'll stick with 2013 and our picks. :)

Zeitler did go in the 1st round (27th overall) to Cincinnati, and he had a pretty good rookie season.

Nobody was calling Decastro a top 10 lock.
These stories are getting larger by the month.
lol
Most did project him to go in the 12-22 range. And many thought he might not even make it to Dallas at 14, so he was highly regraded. But many are starting to exaggerate how much so.

For example. Here is Mel Kipers Final Mock last year--that had Decastro going 20th.
http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft2012/story/_/id/7845687/mel-kiper-final-mock-draft-year

He is Todd McShay's--which had him going 21st.
http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draf...raft-todd-mcshay-final-first-round-projection

He had rating in the high 80s to 90 or so. Great grade for an OG. That is not once in lifetime...it is not even as high as the top two guards this year.

There's no doubt that most had Decastro rated higher, but I personally found him to be a little light in the britches in college to me. I prefer a center to be a power guy, rather than an athlete. No one in their right mind can say that Decastro played with as much power in college.

Zeitler was the Cowboys top OG last year. He was the better fit to what Callahan is looking for and I would assume Fredrickson as well. As theogt just posted DeCastro wasn't a powerful type guy and the powerful type is what they are looking for.
