I remember that play. I was 11 years old watching with my family in a small Texas town. We were all frustrated that the season was apparently over. Then when Staubach heaved it to Pearson, we actually yelled out "awwww" in disappointment because we thought he dropped it, all except for my mom who squealed, "He caught it!" Then they showed the replay and we went nuts.

The Minnesota Vikings were the most powerful team in the league that year. They were clearly the top contender for a Super Bowl championship.

They had the #1 ranked defense with the Purple People eaters, All-Pro Alan Page, Carl Eller, Jim Marshal. They had Pro Bowler MLB Jeff Siemon, Pro Bowl CB Bobby Bryant, All Pro safety Paul Krause....

On offense they had All-Pro RB Chuck Foreman, All Pro QB Fran Tarkenton, and Pro Bowl WR John Gilliam. They had All Pro RT Ron Yary.

5 All Pros.....9 Pro Bowlers.....12-2....#1 defense against the rush and the pass.

This was supposed to be the Cowboys rebuilding season after going 8-6 in 1974 and missing the playoffs for the first time in 9 seasons. It would be another 10 years before they would miss the playoffs again.

"Sigh"....Those were the days.

It's sad that some fans have never experienced that success. It was a special time and the Cowboys were the top organization in football.

as an 11 yr old, i watched the game in a motel room in a suburb of buffalo ny. I was so freakin sad...I switched over to the other game that was either getting ready to start or had already started. Then I flipped back to CBS and I see on the screen

Cowboys 17
Vikings 14
Final

I could not believe it.

as a side note...a playoff game that really made me upset, I think was the year after. Losing 14-12 to the Rams.
Those mid 70s Rams teams were very dominant....they just couldnt get over the top. But they were a great defensive team, great special teams and a very good running team...with Chuck Knox as coach.
