LOS ANGELES — The gaudy numbers put up by the University of Wisconsin football team's offense this season lose their capacity to shock at some point.

Eighty-three points in a game. Forty-six rushing touchdowns. Sixty-seven points a game, on average, in their past three games.

But one number keeps jumping off the stat sheet for Geep Chryst, the tight ends coach for the NFL's Carolina Panthers and the brother of UW offensive coordinator Paul Chryst. Other than his brother, Oregon State coach Mike Riley and possibly current UW senior quarterback Scott Tolzien, Geep Chryst probably knows the Badgers' offense better than anyone.

"The simple fact they've scored about twice as many touchdowns as the number of punts, that one jumps out at me," Geep Chryst said. "That's not even counting the (19) field goals they've attempted."

The Badgers have 68 touch-downs this season against 35 punts. Even subtracting five TDs scored by the defense or special teams, it's a staggering comparison.

this is situation i hope jerry just throws money chryst way and let him have title of OC even if Garrett still calls the play.

Anybody know the latest of this guy? Did he interview with Pitt for the HC job? Is he still a possibility for us?

11:21 pm: Rivals.com's Tom Dienhart is reporting Paul Chryst is no longer a candidate for the Pitt head coaching job.

9:17 pm: The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Jeff Potrykus reports Dallas Cowboys' head coach Jason Garrett will retain play-calling duties, which would hinder any chances of Chryst going to Dallas. He also says the Badgers continue to work on a raise for their offensive coordinator.

4:04 pm: OrangeBloods.com is reporting Boise State offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin and Major Applewhite will be co-coordinators at Texas. If true, that obviously means Chryst won't be going Austin.

2:29 pm: The Hartford Courant is reporting Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Bradley, reportedly the favorite for the Pitt job, is at UConn today. UConn is also searching for a new head coach

As David Moore pointed out, Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett must make a quick decision on the future of offensive assistants John Garrett (tight ends and brother), Ray Sherman (wide receivers) and quarterbacks (Wade Wilson). Their contracts are about to expire, and professional courtesy says Garrett should let them know their future as soon as possible.

In the case of Wilson, keep in mind that Garrett in 2007 tried to hire Paul Chryst for the job. Chryst, Wisconsin's offensive coordinator, and Garrett have a friendship that dates back to their time with San Antonio of the defunct World League.

Chryst has been a hot item on the college coaching carousel throughout the off-season. Going to the NFL as an assistant could be seen as a step down. If Garrett wants Chryst, he could give him the title of offensive coordinator while retaining play-calling duties.

New Orleans coach Sean Payton has that arrangement with his offensive coordinator, Pete Carmichael. Having Carmichael on the staff also allows Payton to spend more time wiht the defense and special teams.

Thanks for the update, if he is no longer a candidate for the Pitt job and he turned UT down, it sounds like he is either staying at Wisconsin or could join our staff. I know money will not be the issue, noway does Wisconsin have the cash to compete with Jerry.

I think it comes down to if Chryst wants to call plays or not. If he thinks the Dallas job is basically being Garrett's gopher, I think he stays. If he likes the idea of working with Garrett, even if he doesnt get to call the plays, then we may still have a shot.

He may be dragging his feet trying to get more money out of Jerry, lets see if Jerry adds a couple more zeros to the offer.

Reading that article reminded me of the Cowboys of 1992-1994. Not that we were ever a prolific scoring team.

It's was the efficiency and balance that was so unusual about us. No team ran and passed the ball as well as we did. We always seemed to have the opposition off balance. Seldom gave up sacks or turnovers and when we got 1st and goal from the 5 or 6 yardline, we were as close to automatic scoring TDs as any team I've ever seen.

My time watching football goes back to 1977.
In that time I've never seen a better short yardage running team.
3rd and 3 is a passing down. Not for that Cowboys team. No team ran as often or successfully on 3rd and 2, 3 or 4 than we did.

Anybody know how many 5th year seniors are on their OL?

I don't know.....just asking.

Does Dallas really need Cryst as OC, or to they instead need their RBs and OLinemen at those positions?

Food for thought!

That's my worst nightmare--Garrett calling plays.

Garrett has already stated that he will be calling the plays next year. He stated it was the "most effective" way to do it.

I thought Garrett play calling improved once he took over...so I dont think its such an issue anymore. Garrett biggest challenge wont be play calling...it will be identifing what happend to core players on this team who collapsed worse than any team in their history. That still hasnt be talked about. It will happen again on some level unless there is some purging of some of the leaders.

I disagree. I think he needs to spend more time with ST and defense. We need a coach, not a coordinator. That's where we went wrong with Wade, just on the other side of the ball.

Scary. So scary based on what I've seen from him in the clutch.

Yeah, the results with him doing it the last 8 games were horrendous. How could we ever be competitive with those sort of offensive results.

I really want this guy to be added to the staff in some capacity. It's obvious he's a great coach and someone Garrett trusts. I think his addition would create a positive dynamic ... keep things fresh on that side of the ball ... another set of eyes ... another opinion from someone who hasn't been there the past three years.

Regarding Garrett's play-calling, we're always going to see things we don't like or understand. I hate those wildcat plays, for example.

But if you look at any other play-caller, you're going to see things that don't make sense. This is not a Dallas thing. It's a football thing. Every team runs plays that occasionally don't work and we're left scratching our heads. Landry called some bad plays ... everybody does.

The reason we notice Garrett so much is because we study and analyze every play he calls.

Averaging 28-29 points a game behind that leaky line with your backup QB really stinks doesn't it?

Yeah, I used to rag on Garrett's playcalling.

But he really improved once he took over. We scored a bunch of points with Kitna at QB; really can't complain

But I do agree he needs an extra set of eyes so that he can focus on being head coach, not solely playcaller

Are you saying he didn't spend time with the defense and ST when he was the interim coach?
