With the way we've tore down our aging DL I saw a prime opportunity to start the reset process that many of us have been thinking is the best course of action this franchise can take. We've spent the past 7 or so years trying to bandaid holes with a core group that our FO was convinced could take the next step and become a contender in this league. That hasn't happened, and with missing the playoffs for 4 consecutive seasons we're starting to see the repurcusions of having to eat some of those bloated contracts and let other walk away due to age, timing and failure. Our quarterback is about to turn 34 and is coming off his 2nd back surgery within in the past year, but is entering the first year of an extension that locks him up with the Cowboys through 2019. Time will tell if he's able to heal from that injury, but our FO is crossing their fingers that he can. As long as he's here, whether you're a believer in him or not, he keeps us competitive and ensures we won't bottom out as he's surrounded by one of the better offensive casts in football. This offense will score a lot of points, and if it can lean a little bit more on the ground game that we saw it should help protect our defense...
Which leads to our current troubled situation. This defense, that lead the league in yards surrendered a year ago, is now without it's sack leader of a year ago and the franchise's all time sack leader. It features a DL composed of journeymen and unproven young players, all of whom are unheralded. The scheme we find ourselves in on defense is solely reliant on the pressure your front 4 can create, and that's a scary proposition for what we're fielding as of today. So as we'ved shed aging players, we find ourselves in a delemma.. do we panic and overpay for more aging vets, or in the case of Melton, a headcase coming off an ACL tear? Or do we stand our ground and rebuild this thing through the draft, which will require more patience and maybe not happen overnight?
No doubt these are the questions circling in Jerry and co's collective minds. They know Romo is not getting any younger and the clock is ticking, but for once I'd like to see them put susstained team success first and stop trying to chase the quick fix by mortaging our future. Let's stop approaching every year with a new plan on how "we can get over the hump this year", and with patience stick to one plan, building an identity and team philosphy that will last over the long haul.
