Decisions Looming for the Cowboys at WR

With the final game of the preseason just days away, and the start of the regular season growing closer and closer, the Cowboys have soon got to make a decision as to who the fifth (and likely final) wide receiver will be. The “active” competition for the slot is between third year veteran Isaiah Stanback and rookie free agent Kevin Ogletree.

Based on pure stats the decision would be a definite no brainer to most sane individuals, but somehow there is still a question. In three preseason games Stanback has recorded 1 reception for 1 yard (which he promptly fumbled away) and 6 kick returns for 127 yards (21.2 per attempt).

Ogletree on the other hand has recorded 5 receptions for 73 yards, two of which were key 3rd down catches working with the 1st team offense, and 1 TD. In the return game Ogletree has 5 returns for 142 yards or 28.4 yards per return (Team high).

The problem that the Cowboys have with making the clear decision is the fact that they already have two full seasons invested in Stanback and he is full of potential with good speed, a big frame, and good strength. The problem I have with that thought is that for two years his name has rarely come off the injury report, and he has virtually no production on the field.

Now the kicker to this whole thing is special teams, more importantly kickoffs. The concern the Cowboys have is that a player that far down on the depth chart will inevitably have to run down the field and make tackles on kickoff coverage units. Funny thing about that is that while Ogletree has yet to record a tackle this preseason, Stanback has yet to record a tackle in his entire professional career.

If the decision were mine, then there would be no question as to which wide receiver would take that presumed fifth and final spot on the depth chart, Kevin Ogletree. It seems that all the questions are regarding Stanback’ potential, however it seems nobody is looking at the potential of the rookie free agent. Simply put, Ogltree has more receptions, yards, and touchdowns in three preseason games, than Stanback has in three years. Realistically, what is there to decide? What do you think?

The decision is made.

Ogletree got 1st team reps last game, Stanback was in there on the last play.

Not just 1st team reps, Ogletree was in there on the 1st series making plays. I knew he played with the 1st team but I didn't know it was on the 1st possession until I watched the game again last night.

Stanback is done.

Yeah, this is a stupid article. The ONLY possible question, is if Stanback is kept on the roster as a 6th WR, or do they only keep 5.....

An UDFA had better not be our only hope, but I was encouraged while watching him the last two preaseason games; and I believe he can contribute.

If by some chance Dallas were to go 6 WR I would have Stanback and Johnson play a lot in this game and let them battle it out however I think Dallas will go 5 WR and stanback will get released.

Alot of people don't realize how good Manuel Johnson is, hopefully he makes it past cuts and onto the practice squad. I absolutely hate Dallas playing this kind of game with contributing guys not too much unlike Matt Moore. If given the chance he would have shined in pre-season, but maybe nobody else noticed.

It was a joke and play on words from star wars.

IMO I think Ogletree will develop into our 2nd WR later in the year. I know that sounds nuts, but he has all the intangibles to make it there. Everybody is wanting Austin to be that deep speed threat, but I think Ogletree is going to be that guy. I just have a feeling. He's no Amendola, or Rambo, etc.

He reminds me a lot of Tori Holt.

I think he could be this year's Marques Colston.

That would be a pleasant and welcomed surprise.

Dallas should have traded Stanback, Carpenter and a 7th rounder to Oakland for Thomas Howard and Johnny Lee Higgins ;-P

There are so many draft snobs here. When you look at all the high round busts that happen every year I find it difficult to believe how many are still hung up on when someone was drafted and how someone cannot be all that good if they were not.

The Rat was a 7th rd pick.

Romo was a UDFA.

Witten, probably the best TE in football, lasted to the 3rd rd and might have fallen farther.

Meanwhile we of course have the example of Barbie Doll right in our face.

If not for the injuries to all the other players at LB & DB, I think it would be a very srtong possiblity they keep Stanback. But now I do not they that is possible. Unless they put McGee on IR, and keep only 2 QB's,, then go short on the OL or DB's
What also makes the numbers game less in favor of keeping a 6th WR, is keeping a KO guy in Buehler, in which he will contribute MUCH more than the 6th WR. So that is a good roster decision.
