For the last few weeks, I have written articles about possible first round selections for the Dallas Cowboys. But the main reason I have done so is to help fans of the team be prepared in case defensive tackle Aaron Donald doesn’t fall to #16. If you have followed this site for the last few months, you would have seen the multitude of Aaron Donald posts. It is almost a consensus with Cowboys Nation that Aaron Donald should be the pick in the first round. But what if he doesn’t make it to #16? Then what? My goal to my readers is to prepare them for anything that could occur come draft day and this leads us to our prospect of the week; Auburn defensive end, Dee Ford.

I’m going to steal a saying from one of my scouting buddies Josh Norris of Rotoworld.com; disruption is production. Let me explain what that means. Often, we look at sack totals to define how good or a bad a pass rusher’s season was. Look no further than Jadeveon Clowney in 2013 to prove that. While sacks are nice, they aren’t the all encompassing stat that show how disruptive a player was in a given game.

And this brings me to Auburn pass rusher Dee Ford. Undersized as a defensive end at only 6’2, 245 pounds, Ford isn’t a perfect fit in Rod Marnelli’s defense. But he can do one thing that should catch the Cowboys eye; rush the passer. And that’s what we are going to look at today. How pressure and disruption can ruin plays and drives, without recording a sack. You may know Ford best by his comments at the NFL Combine when he called out Jadeveon Clowney, saying that he was a better player than Clowney. That comment raised some eyebrows. But Ford put on a show at his pro day to rival Clowney’s unbelievable Combine. Check it out:

He's a situation 4-3 DE. You don't draft a situational pass rusher where he is going to go. I like the players but not at the cost.

I certainly wouldn't rule it out. The coaches want Quick-twitch and speed over size. Well, Ford is the embodiment of that statement.

I agree that Ford now enters the conversation, although I think I prefer others at better value. Marcus Smith, Jeremiah Attaochu are two of my favorites in R2/R3.

That's still using our valuable resource at what was not a position of need until we made it one. We've created one more hole in the line-up and are counting on the same yahoo who got us in this mess, to now bail us out.

We already needed 3 new starters on the D Line, now we need 4. Our 1st round pick only solves one problem.

I think keeping a declining Ware at $12 mil and expecting him to help out more than he did last year (not much) would have been a bigger problem.

Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney disagree.

Mathis was selected 138th and currently plays as an OLB. He has done nothing to show he should have been a first round pick. Freeney weighs 20lbs more than Ford and even still, because of his diminutive stature, didn't play at a really high level for many seasons.

Shazier would be better for the Cowboys 4-3 unless y'all want to move back to the 3-4

Then Shazer has to top the list...

Just playing devil's advocate ;)

DE and the 3T DT position are positions they consider in the first round. Typically in a 43, OLB is not.

However, I agree with you that he would be terrific in our scheme and he has speed to burn (and lacks size).

I had hoped that he might somehow slide into the second round where a slight trade up might net Shazier.

Alas, his lightning fast 40 time probably killed that dream.

Perhaps Dallas would take Shazier if they traded back late enough in the first round? Who knows.

He was a defensive end for years and let's take a look at his resume:

111 sacks in 11 years

5 Pro Bowls

48 FF's

19.5 Sacks in 2013

SB Champion

I bet he disagrees that he shouldn't have been a first round pick.

I dont know where people get that from.were mathis and sweeny situational passrushers? Ford went up against the best talent in college football and dominated. I refuse to believe he cant be a fulltime DE.
