Deebo Samuel sends clear message as free agency continues

In the NFL, the really freaky athletes age better than the relatively average or poor athletes, because they have that extra step to lose. Tony Pollard lost a step from his best in Dallas, and he's still a 1,000 yard rusher. Von Miller just got 9 sacks at 36 freaking years old. He's probably 3 steps slower than his best and that's still fast enough to beat OTs.

Deebo was never a freakish athlete, not by the NFL's lofty standards. He was an average mover for 210 lbs, all things considered. He was RB strong and had RB vision, and his routes at WR were at least credible. So Kyle Shanahan had a ton of joy basically using him as an extension of the run game. But Deebo was never a freak specimen who had steps to lose.

Now that Deebo is 30 and injuries are piling up, he's lost those 1 or 2 steps. His overall athleticism has dipped from "average NFL RB" to "really slow NFL RB", and he's not nearly as dangerous in the open field as he used to be.

If Deebo had honed his craft as a route runner, he could've aged into a Wes Welker type pure slot role. But if he's not a great separator, and not a great gadget guy, then it's hard to find him a role any more. Definitely tough to find a large one.
