Deeper analysis of run woes

Was the poor running game a failure of the o-line, poor running of the running backs, or maybe something else? The Giants didn't really stop the run with their front 7.

The two leading tacklers for the Giants were Rouse and Brown and the safeties were making a lot of the plays. How did they shut us down? A lot of Run Blitzes - even Wade said as much today.

As one poster (Maury) pointed out on the DMN blog:

"Part of the problem is the 22 (2 backs, 2 TE). You can't strike deep from this formation. The other part of the problem is that Dallas seems to under utilize play action or they just can't sell it well. On the second TD to Williams they made a great fake, but they can't seem to do that consistently as defenses commit safeties to stop the run."

I think our offensive line has broken down in run blocking the last couple of weeks, starting @ Green Bay. Whatever it is, we need to get it corrected if we have any hopes of getting to and winning in the playoffs.

It's really difficult to get a team to bite on a play fake out of shotgun.

I just dont see any reason why we cant get 3 yards a pop running behind the 50 million dollar 400 pound house of a human.

This is very true too. I don't have too much of a problem with shotgun when it's working, but it's a lot easier to fool the defense into which way the run is going when you're under center.

It's hard to run with stacking the box and run blitzing the crap out of us. We still needed to run to avoid third and long.

I think we ran a little too much and we didn't run any deep patterns. That was a big mistake. Also running out of the gun a little too much and not taking advantage of the play action.

I think Romo is just more comfortable in the gun than under center. I can't believe we run the gun so much just for Garrett's sake.

From what you say there, and I actually agree, we run the gun so much because Romo seems to like it. We do those delay draws off of it to keep teams looking for the run when we go shotgun so they don't just all drop off.

We absolutely can...a certain somebody doesn't have the patience for that.

I don't understand why we run the shotgun so often. Same thing for that delayed draw.

The Giants stacked the box to stop our run game. It worked and it didn't. They did stop the run, but it allowed us to get almost 400 yards passing. We didn't lose because we couldn't run. We lost because our defense couldn't tackle and our special teams fell apart. I agree we should've mustered a better ground game than we did, but their defense was clearly keying on the run.
