Defenders - Keep or Shop?

The Jaylon Smith trade rumor thread got me thinking who are the definite keepers and who are the players I would shop around. I took a quick glance at the roster now (keeping in mind who I picked up in FA, the draft, and UFAs) and rated the players who were here last year and still on the roster.

My definite keepers, not shopping them around: CB Diggs, DL Gallimore, DL Gregory, CB Brown, CB Lewis, DL Hamilton, and S Wilson. These are the players I want to keep based on potential, experience, talent, and contract. Took a quick glance and maybe missed some. Not that I necessarily want to get rid of all the others but I would listen intently to all offers for the others.

1) Lawrence - Production not worth the ridiculous contract. Peaked years ago and I don't see much going forward. See him as a progress stopper at this point. Doesn't give me a whole lot more than the FAs and draftees in my opinion. Contract is a killer. I would need to give up picks for some team to take that contract. I would give a 3rd round pick if someone would eat that contract. Most likely no takers anyway. Maybe if I ate $10M of his salary this year, some team would offer something. Maybe a 3rd I could get if I ate $10M. If Odiggy, Golston, and the FAs show something in camp, I would pull the string on eating $10M and getting a 3rd rounder. Most likely dumping Lawrence next year anyway in my opinion.

2) Jaylon Smith - I eat 1/2 his salary this year and you give me a late round pick or player and I am tempted. Got Parsons, Cox, Neal, and maybe some others to cover his loss.

3) LVE - Borderline keep for this year or dump. Can he stay healthy is the gamble. Final year and often injured but has potential. Show me a player or a 4th round pick and I am tempted.

Who would be your definite keepers and who would you shop on defense?
 
At this point, I would not shop anyone. That shouldn’t happen until at least half way through training camp and probably not till camp is over. Why? Two reasons. First, you never know about injuries. I can guarantee we will lose at least a couple of players for the year due to injury. It always happens. You just hope it isn’t to major contributors. Second, we really don’t know what we have in some of these players due to the lack of an off-season last year and no preseason games. You can also factor in the inept defensive coaching last year.
 
In short our defense is full of underachievers and players that are overpaid, don't expect much of a return. We just need to cut the dead weight as soon as possible, no one's going to take out our trash. Let alone pay for the privilege.
 
If they shopped J Smith, they got no takers with the combination of his film and the contract.

I do think Lawrence would show up better on film but that contract is tough to swallow for the production.

I will further the thought of BourbonBalz because I don't think these players have had as good a DC as Quinn since they became Cowboys. I would like to see how he handles this but I am already assuming he was on board with shopping J. Smith and them taking 2 LBs out of the first 6 picks but they did end up with a Noah's Arc draft in the first 6 picks, 2 LB, 2 CB and 2 DL. I don't think Quinn is sold on anyone but the FA's they picked up.

I really like his hands on approach and reading the eyes of his players. He is a players' coach but I don't think that buys anyone a ticket. He is trying to recover his career and reputation.
 
I don't want to trade away anyone. We are Finally going to have real competition across the board, and you want get rid of a bunch of them? I think Parsons and Cox are going to be good, but no way do I just want to hand them starting spots. Is the OP secretly Jason Garrett?

And, while you could make the argument thst he isn't worth the contract, this defense is FAR better with DLAW, then without - you do remember that the whole premise of this game is to try to win, right? Until we need the salary cap space, why would you want to get rid of your best defensive player? Boggles my mind.

But but but I’ve been told sacks aren’t a true indicator of a guy who’s making $21 mil per’s worth.
 
There's not one player on this defense that has trade value and we don't want to keep to build around.

The veterans are either too expensive, underperforming, or both...

And the younger better players aren't worth much more than the same round we got them in, so why do it?

The ONLY two guys who have trade value are our starting ends.

Almost every Cowboy cut so far this year has been picked up by another team. Many posters thought no team would pick them up.

Maybe the DC was not any good and using the players incorrectly. Maybe the player is better than someone they presently have.

Now, if all the players are trash and untalented, then no reason to shop anyone.

Almost all Cowboy cuts so far some team picked up.

They weren't very good in 2019 either lol......the ones that were good in 2019 are gone now(Robert Quinn, Byron Jones) or they are too expensive(Lawrence).

It serves no point in trading them.

Its just one of those things where these guys mean more to our team than a 7th round pick we'd get in return for them.
 
Honestly the players you could shop like Gallup are worth more to us than you could get
There are a few you could shop but guys you’ve paid are very hard to trade
You trade guys before you pay them, not after

So, if some team calls, you just hang up and say ‘we’re good, we like our players.’

You can also get a player, not limited to draft picks.
 
we would have to drop most of our defense off at the goodwill for them to be "shopped"....hope the new guys are upgrades.

That's all premature. We have to get a sense of how the new additions on the team are going to work out before we consider getting rid of the players you noted. Jaylon and LVE may both have comeback years.

Not if they are not in the long range plans and are nothing but progress stoppers now. What if the team is moving on from them next year. Try to get something now. Another year of maybe stink from them and you get nothing.

If Odiggy and Golston give you 80% of Lawrence this year and 100% of Lawrence next year with one year of game time experience, then it is worth it.

High probability Lawrence gets cut next year IMO.
