Defending Garrett

Guys:

I don't know if Garrett is the long term answer as HC, but I think his decisions in the last game can be defended.

1. Time out before kick: I saw ST coach approach before he called time out. I think they felt the kicker was being rushed.

2. Not calling time out to run another play: What are they gonna do? It's going to be a running play with the defense stacked against them. Are they going to gain or lose yardage? Note: I saw the OL make several mistakes that left free DL come through to stop the run or sack the passer.

Bottom line: Right now we are a pretty good team, but not a good one. That's why we can't put anybody away unless we get turnovers. We need help at OL, WR (yes our WR are OK, but not highly skilled), CB, S, DL and IL. Note: Austin will help at WR and Dez will improve with experience. If you look closely at our team we are playing too many undrafted free agents and castoffs. Some are OK, but you need a solid core of high draft picks.

Thoughts?

What would you say if I told you that even if they didn't intent on running any plays after the first down catch that the right call was still a time out over a spike?

1. If Bailey doesn't kick that ball (and it was obvious it was not a real play) no one brings up icing. They just think of it as us giving the kicking team some extra time to set up which is all that we were really doing. I don't blame Boniol or Joe D for asking for the TO and I don't blame Garrett for calling the TO.

We focus way too much on result and not enough on process. The process for making that decision was correct. The result doesn't look good because Bailey didn't hit the second ball right - landed 5 yards short. I don't know what went wrong - field issue, snap issue, hold issue.... but the fact is when the chips were down he didn't kick the ball well.

2. About the decision not to run another play I understand Garrett's reasoning and I would agree if we had 10 seconds left not to run another play. But we had 20 seconds left so we could make up for one bad play even if we had one. 5 yards of field position probably increases the chance of FG success by about 20% (50 yards vs. 45 yards). 10 yards of field position increases success by 30% (50 yards vs 40 yards).

3. I think this game showed as I have been claiming that Robinson and Dez aren't very good receivers. The Cards doubled Witten and left those guys 1-on-1 and they couldn't beat the coverage consistently. We really missed Miles today. I think we need a very fast, shifty WR to use against such coverages. These big, long striders just don't get much separation. Unless they are giant beasts like a Calvin Johnson or Vincent Jackson I don't think the size benefits them that much in throwing up jump ball type plays. We need a guy like Davone Bess, Steve Smith, Santana Moss or Wes Welker out there. The new strict enforcement of non-contact rules really help guys like this out.

4. Our OL is still pretty bad against good DLs. The Cards pushed us around all day. You combine that with WRs that can't get open and you see why we only scored 13 points (even with the two missed FGs that is still only 19 points).

5. I think we vastly underrated the Cardinals defense. It looks like they have really turned the corner. Campbell was more of a force out there yesterday than anyone on our defense. It looks like they were starting to get the new scheme the last month and they are 4-1 over that stretch with a pretty bad QB (Skelton was starting before Kolb).

Dez Bryant 8 for 86 and a TD

L Robinson 4 for 76

What about those numbers says not good?

I think the special teams coaches blew it; Garrett looked calm. McBriar stated that they practice that situation all the time. Bailey was clearly read to kick that football, and it would have been good.

Everyone kept their cool except for the special teams coaches.

I know how Garrett must have felt. I slid into third base one time, the third game of the day, after going first to third. There were no outs, and my team was losing 5-2. The ball got away, but I wanted to stay at third base. I was tired of running the bases all day (it was hot). The play was going to be close, and I just wanted 3rd base. The power hitters were coming up. Everyone in the dugout started screaming for me to go, and I hesitated about 3 times and then ran for the plate and got thrown out. My brain was right, but the external "panic" screwed me up. I was upset with those dummies. :)

By the way, I'm not very happy that Felix Jones averaged 6.0 YPC and only rushed 6 times in this game. Jones touched the football 10 times for 155 all-purpose yards, and the Cardinals were clearly having problems with his speed and quickness. Jones' 11 yard run (his 6th and last carry and only carry of the second half) came on 3rd and 1, and he almost broke it.

The Cardinals coaches never had to stop Jones in the game, because Dallas' coaches did it for them.

Is Felix Jones going to touch the football enough against a team that he hung 136 total yards on last year (17 touches, 71T)? Also, Jones has a 7-96-1 (LG 56) game against the Giants on his resume (2009).

I'm more upset about a hot Felix Jones' lack of rushes when he was averaging 6.0 YPC in that game, especially after Jones had a 16-77 (4.8 YPC) game at Arizona last year. I wondered where the screens were against all those inside blitzes, too.

I'm still not buying the Cowboys winning the NFC East without Felix Jones touching the football enough, and yesterday was a great example. The previous two games were barely won by Dallas, too.

I would dial up the "flash play" or zone bend play (wind-back play) and torch the Giants with Felix Jones.

Timeout or spike? Who cares. Bailey was making those FGs in warm ups all day, I was there.

If Bailey makes it, Garrett is a genius. Bailey misses he is a lowlife for a week.

Welcome to the zone... I enjoyed the past four weeks, hopefully we beat NY so things can calm down again.

Well my point was that taking the timeout is preferable over spiking it. You want to leave time on the clock in the event of a bad snap that winds up running out the game. With 7 seconds, you might not have enough time.

everybody all over the country is blasting him today. nobody is backing him except the most ardent cowboy shades wearers here on CZ.

Maybe instead of panicking over nothing (Mcbriar said that nothing was wrong, they were fine and ready to snap the ball), they should have worried about something that was actually there - Bailey attempting those long FGs. He missed wide left on all of those long attempts (that 50 yarder he made was leaning left and bounced off the upright). So what happens when Bailey attempts that 49 yarder? He misses it wide left of course. What about when Bailey attempted that shorter kick? He drilled it right down the middle

So with that in mind, you have to make an attempt to keep moving the ball. I don't care what Bailey was making in warmups, during the game he was struggling wide left on all his long kicks

This.

I still think he's the coach of the future, I'm just worried that it's going to take to long for him to get there and he's going to end up filling that role somewhere else.

He wasn't rushed at all...when McBriar looked back at Bailey and the clock there were 8 seconds. When he went to take the snap there were 5 seconds...all of this according to McBriar. There WAS no rush...NONE at all. 5 to 8 seconds is quite a bit of time in the NFL...we are ALWAYS taking the clock to 2 or 3 or less on virtually every offensive snap.

What do you have to backup him being the coach of the future? He is learning on the job right now. We can't afford that! Bring a coach in that knows what the hell is going on and can prepare and motivate his team. Someone who gets in their faces and pumps them up.

That is not enough when you are 1-on-1 all day. A very good WR eats that up for a monster type day 150 yards and a few big plays and TDs.

Those guys are really just okay. They are not real difference makers. They are a #2 guy and a #3 guy. We are missing our #1 and it showed badly.
