Yea thats an excuse to how the defense isn't playing up to their potential.
Hey, I've heard that if you go look up "clueless" in the dictionary, your picture is there, grinning at us...
Is that true??
Let's start with the fact that this is PRESEASON, which is all about EXPERIMENTING with different personnel combinations... thus, at this point we don't really know who will even be on the field in particular situations...
Then, let's consider that guys are being given a chance to show what they have, guys who won't even be on the team come opening day... thus, at this point we can't really formulate any opinions about how good this defense will be...
Next, let's consider that the coaches are deliberately keeping some packages under wraps, so that opponents can't get a book on them before the games start to count... thus, we haven't seen the full range of options for this defense...
Then, let's factor in that two of our best defensive players aren't playing right now, including our best cover corner... thus, anybody who forms an opinion about how good that defense will be is pretty much a fool...
And even with all that, the Boys held the Chargers to 213 yards of total offense, 3.9 yards per play... and in the first half of the game last night, starters on starters, the Toxins racked up all of 129 yards of total offense, on 31 plays (4.2 yards per play)... that's two examples of some pretty dominant defense, actually...
And of course, teams with potent offenses like the Boys have score quickly, which puts the opponents' offense back on the field... this puts even more pressure on a defense... look at the Cowboys' time of possession last year, they ranked 24th in the league... viewed through that prism, their defensive numbers look even better...
If you knew ANYTHING about the game of football, I wouldn't have to explain all of this to you... I repeat, anybody who reaches any conclusions about how good (or bad) this defense will be based on what they've seen so far is a fool, because they haven't really seen much of the defense they'll see once the games start to count...
You seem to think that a "good" defense is supposed to hold opponents to under 250 yards a game, game after game after game... that's beyond ridiculous, with the rules of the game set up the way they are... in this league, allowing your opponents to average 325 yards a game makes you an AVERAGE defense, and if you hold your opponents to at or just under 300 yards a game, you're a top 10 defense... similarly, if you're allowing opponents to average 21 points per game, you're an AVERAGE defense, and if you're allowing them to average 19 a game, you're a top 10 defense... and if you hold your opponents to an average of 18 a game or less, you're a top FIVE defense... only three defenses last year gave up under 17 points per game...
Moral to this story-- the NFL is intended to be an offensive league, because fans like to see points put up on the board... if you really knew anything at all about the game, you'd understand that, but you clearly don't...
