Defense a passing Grade?

Do you give the Defense a passing grade for its performance against the Giants?

They forced a turnover and also scored on it. Also forced a stop in the 4th. But the Giants didn’t punt for the 1st time until midway through the 3rd Quarter. Plus they are also one of the worst Offenses in Football.

So do you think it’s fine as long as we got the Win or still very much Concerned?

No, not at all.

The same problem persists … even when they do well for a few plays, they inexplicably ruin it by leaving a receiver wide open - completely uncovered - and that undermines everything. The D-Line is spotty, and the LBs can also be at times, but there are at least signs here and there of them making some plays to stop drives, but that isn't the case with the DBs. They seem to completely blow coverage assignments too often.

If you compare this performance to the previous 4 games, it is "A" otherwise it is still "D" ish. Hopefully the positive trend continues and getting back injured players should help.

That’s on the line of my thinking. I loved having Romo in the Booth! He points out all of our issues perfectly! Especially how the middle of our D-line just gets washed away.

The Giants are so bad that yesterday can’t be seen as a win for the defense. Losing another DT made it even worse. It’s an evaluation year on defense. I’d use the entire draft on defensive guys + a punter.

I think quality of the opponent had a lot to do with any perceived improvement, but they did make a nice play forcing a turnover and scoring off it. Got the ball back late as well.

Still, the Giants offense scored as many TDs yesterday as they did in their first four games. That defensive effort won't be good enough against better teams.

It's an awful defense.

Hope they spend every pick on secondary players come April.

Especially corners. ;)

Giants scored 47 points in 4 games and 34 points yesterday. If that doesn't say no, I don't know what does...

Worst part of all this...
Did any of you see the Raiders VS Chiefs?

Jeff Heath made a game changing interception for the Raiders.

The Raiders also stunned the Chiefs with a great defensive performance with a bunch of random draft picks and FA Acquisitions. They don’t have any Star players on Defense, neither do the Giants. But they can constantly can put on a good Defensive showing for a couple of games.

14 points were on the O.

A D that can hold an opponent to 20ish while missing key players and adapting to a new system without preseason is going to be good enough moving forward

No. The defense was terrible again. They made a few plays because the Giants offense is terrible. Giving up 34 points to a team that had scored only 3 TDs all year is a joke. I don't how Nolan lasts much longer.

The Giants were arguably the worst offense in the league.

And this defense gave up 27 points to them, when they had been averaging only 9 points a game in the four prior games. People trying to rationalize this stuff with, "well on one of the TDs, the offense put them in a bad spot." Stop. Why can't the defense hold the team to a FG there, at least?

It was a failure. Again.

The defense was putrid. We didn't stop them. They stopped themselves with 2 TDs called back on penalties.

No

But to be fair, the offense gave up 14 of those points....and 7 directly

Stop with this. Sure, the 7 scored on the int don't count but trying to rationalize away the other 7 because it was turnover in our territory is ridiculous. That Giants O was brutal and I bet a better defense likely would have held them to only 3.

The Giants averaged around 9 points a game. Even if you want to be the easiest grader in the world and not count 14 points, they still gave up 20 to arguably the worst offense in the NFL up until that point. Further, when you dig into the stats, it shows what a putrid performance it was.

- Giants were one of the worst at converting 3rd downs. We let them convert over 50%.
- Jones had his best rating and QBR game against this defense

Looking at the numbers, it's kind of hard to see how the Giants scored 27 (on O).

300 total yards, 4.8 YPP, 6.0 YPA passing, 3.3 YPC.
Not exactly impressive numbers.

But watching, it looked easy for them.

Defense is porous against the run.

Defense is merely adequate against the pass.

Tackling is suspect.

Effort is staggered not between games but between quarters of every game.

Coaching has not adjusted to on-field deficiencies in a clear and detailed way.

I will take 'Still Very Much Concerned' for 200, Alex.
