Defense after 4 Games

I don't disagree.

good news is there is incremental improvement year over year 5pts a game better on defense. unfortunately, the defense is averaging 1 more penalty per game and 6 yds more. Conversely, offense has also gotten better year over year but not as dramatically 2 pts per game better and offensive penalties is 1 less per game for 2 yds less. funny enough, the actual results reflect these changes in that we are a half a game better than last year (2-2 v 1-2-1).

But I think the larger or I should say broader perspective of this it's not the same as the last two years because it's a completely new coaching staff and a completely new scheme and a purge of about 70% of the defensive roster therefore this is very very new IT has gonna have bigger growing pains so it's not what you see is what you're gonna get There's a lot of room to grow here..

The fact is you just added JPJ He needs time to get in they need to figure out how to now change some of the depth chart and some of the roles how many reps guys are getting because right now some of them need to be reversed but this 10 days off after Thursday should give them time to make those changes they should be watching a lot of film with their eyes glued open with toothpicks..

What they started with games 1-5 Needs to change but the first thing they knew is get out with a win It is a home game There's no excuse for a loss.

Then reevaluate everything you thought going from training camp to game one and then game six, iMHO there needs to be shakeup of a lot of the positions groups.

For one there should be a shake up Overshown should come back but he should not be off the ball linebacker he should not be weak sideline backer he could be the backup there but he needs to be a pass rusher he needs to be an outside linebacker, that should help there.


How they divide up the corner spots I think that you take downs 13 and make him more of a safety in the box downhill rushing the passer that kind of thing, for now,

Give Bland more of the nickel slot and see how that works Put Revel in or someone else maybe when Durant comes back hes there..

Correct, the run defense didn't matter.

They won because of how good the offense is.

You must have been watching a totally different game to me then, because if the Texans had been able to establish the run, the whole game would have changed and there would have been less time on the field for the Cowboys offense. Yes the Cowboys won the game primarily through the offense, but had the Run DEF not shown up they would not have.

I get we have to allow for a ramp up with a new DC, but am I the only one who sees our DB nearly ALWAYS giving up 10 yards underneath? It’s like we have 10 players on defense, and whoever has the middle third is just ABSENT.

Yeah, lets talk about the other DBs.

First Durrant. Who got torched on a depp ball that was over thrown. He gave up his fair share of receptions, then he got hurt.

Revel has been ok. Some good, some bad. But hes still learning.

Downs has been generally good. Pass pro has been ok, run fits hes been really good.

Hooker is still weak. Then he went out. Then we lost Locke and Thompson.

Then Revel went down.

Playing with Reddy Stewart, Carson, Bell, Speed, Clark. Thats basically what we had last year in the secondary. Makes Hooker look like an all pro.

That and we have no coverage LBs. And our OLBs are defensive ends.

Doesn't matter if they established the run because their offense was good anyway. Texans had the third-highest EPA/play of the week behind the Cowboys and Panthers lol.

Just throwing this out there, Houston was only 3/10 on third down and they couldn't run the ball, so there are small improvements being made.

Bland is 9th in aav 22.5
And corners get paid.

Witherspoon is 2nd at 33 million and has given up 8 more receptions than Bland. Thats 2 a game.

Blands a bargain compared to Witherspoon. Right? If its all about how many receptions you give up.

We must be watching a different team because I see no improvement from game 1. The only game this defense has had any real success was when Daniels got hurt and Washington derailed after that.

Our secondary might be the worst in the league. No playmakers and constantly chasing receivers and wide open guys all game.

Back to back game we have given up 30pts or more. A Giants game of the worst defensive performance in the last years of the NFL.

This offense is going to have to score 35 or more per game to have any shot.

honestly, If I'm going to give up points, I'd rather it be through the air than ramming it down our throats. Our offense is good enough that you want to give it as many chances as possible. NYG showed how debilitating it can be to give our offense reduced chances to score.

What difference does it make? If the opponent is scoring every drive, the only difference is how many points they score.

giving up points doesn't indicate that they are scoring on every drive or that they score TDs every time they score. I'd much rather have 4-6 attempts to match or out score the opponent (like we had in the last 3 games) vs 2 possessions that we had in the NYG game.

This doesn't make sense. If the defense is getting stops then it doesn't matter if the other team is running or passing.

The key is whether the defense gets stops or not.

I’m not too optimistic right now. We are 30th in points per drive, which I guess is better than 32 where we started at versus the giants but is still pants. Houston has a middling offense too so there’s that to take into account. If there is one area of concern that’s improved it’s interior run defense but other major issues, plays on the edges whether it’s runs or short passes, explosive passing plays all over the secondary or shorter passes over the middle have not improved at all.

Houston's 3rd down conversion rate for the season is 35.19, so that's more of what they usually do than our D.
