Whatever allows a team to score more than an opponent is what wins. In the end, it takes both sides to win. One can’t do it without the other. The Pats dense limiting the high flying Chiefs offense sure mattered.

You’re not gonna win a Super Bowl averaging 22 points a game in TODAYs nfl.

Sorry. Not sorry
Probably not, but you’re also probably not going to win if you give up an average of 32 points per game either. This year’s teams happen to be offensive focused teams, but next year a team carried more by the defense might be in. This year doesn’t define the NFL now and forevermore.

I disagree. Rams shut down Zeke, Ingram and Kamara. You can't go by regular season ranking you must look at what they do in the playoffs. After Eagles scored 14 points in the first quarter the saints didn't allow them too score again. Dallas had a great defense but have up over 200 yards rushing to the Rams.

Part of not letting the other team score is sustaining drives. We had a chance to convert third down in the Rams games and keep drives going and flat out missed.

There are always exceptions, but the better combo of QB/coach usually wins championships.

Its one year. Defense has and always will win championships but that doesn't mean having no defense but a great offense is enough. Look at KC. Great offense but couldn't stop New England. The worst things teams can do, and too many will do, is chase the latest fad. A good offense is necessary but at least a decent defense is also necessary.

I can agree. This year doesn't define the NFL but it has been trending that way. Rule changes have made offenses more potent Last years super bowl also featured top 5 offenses in the league as well

Defense doesnt win championships in 2019...

The top 4 teams Rams, Patriots, Chiefs, Saints .....all offense teams

And of course the Superbowl Rams vs Patriots (offense game)

I still think our best shot is building a dominant defense because of our QB
NE and LARams both just won their games w/ D.

yet both Rams and Pats were around the tops in creating turnovers. Defense matters, ask KC DC who just got fired what KC thinks about importance of defense

Right. Because ultimately the defense has to make a stop, otherwise it's just the last team possessing the ball that wins. Last year's SB showed that. Philly made the stop that won the game. That's been our achilles heel - we were unable to make the stop we needed in 2014 and 2016.

Rams and Patriots defenses have been playing a lot better in the post-season. Don't let the second half fool you, the Pats shut down Mahomes for 2 quarters and had them playing catch up in the second.

And Rams D may finally be playing up to their potential.

Championships almost always come down to which defense gets hot near the end - they also have to be top 5-10 in important categories, and that's normally with turnovers.

Your right but the majority of people on this board will shoot you down because they don't understand the modern game of football which really was kicked off by the 2007 Patriots.
This is not your Joe Gibbs, couter trey, Bill Parcells, OJ Anderson or even Jimmy Johnson Zampesesque league.
The Patriots have always had a good defense. Which is evidenced by the fact all their super bowl games are tight, mostly one score games. They have the ability to force 3 and outs when most needed. It has always been historically a combination of the right amount of offense and defense to complement each other. And it always will be.

Yes, however, the counterpoint is that the lack of defense can prevent you from winning championships.

The Chiefs defense is why they aren't playing in a Superbowl this season.

Or maybe scoring 0 points in the 1st half?

The best super bowl teams of all time could do it all on both sides of the ball. People forget the 70’s Steel Curtain had one of the NFL’s best aerial attacks. The ‘96 packers were #1 in Off and #1 in Def. ‘89 9ers had a top 10 D. 2017 Eagles had #2 rushing attack, #6 passing attack and #4 scoring&yards D. Everyone focuses on Tom Brady with the Patriots, but very little is said about the HC being a lifelong linebackers coach. Patriots have always had a consistent, LB-led, stingy D, including many years that were elite.

A shutdown defense with a competent offense can still win a championship but today’s high flying offenses can simply outscore teams. Add a competent defense to one of them and that’s what truely wins in today’s NFL.

Whoever played the best defense in every playoff game won.

Sure they do but you need a competent offense to go along with it. Defense alone is not enough, never was.
I disagree defense wasn’t enough. Before they changed the rules dominant defenses could get it done. The 85 Bears, the 2000 Ravens, the 2002? Bucs, recent Seahawks, etc. The Bears almost win a SB with Rex Grossman.

Now the league has made it almost impossible to stop the good offenses from scoring.

This season, a case could be made for D's don't make it. 8 of the top 10 scoring teams made it and the final 4 was the top 4. The Cowboys were low dogs on the totem pole at 22nd with 21.2 ppg. The Cowboys gave up 20.2 ppg, a whopping 1 point difference over 16 games. No wonder they were the darling of close games but a team cannot always count on that.

There were only 3 team in both top 10's and only 1 made the final 4 and is headed to the SB, guess who? Balance, I do not like NE but there is no better example of real balance and that has been their secret to success. And that is not by accident, this season they were the 5th ranked rushing offense and 8th ranked pass offense.

They are the team that has been in both top 10's more than any others and it is not even close which is why they go to the AFC Champs game every season and the SB half of them.

One thing Belichick has done better than anyone else in this cap era, he has concentrated his resources equally on the O and D and usually has a team that can beat you anyway you want to play it. He always has a good rush game but seldom a superstar and the only one player you can take out of the game and win is his QB. And the only way to do that is up the gut with the pass rush so the Rams do have a chance if they play Giants ball and hit him in the mouth, hard and often. Mr. GQ doesn't like to be touched. Mr. Defense has to have a MVP type game.

Great defenses beat great offenses just about every time. The problem is there aren’t any great defenses right now.

Elite defenses can keep a bad offense in the game, and even a bad offense will score points. But even if offenses play really well like the chiefs did, their defense was terrible and couldn't stop Brady when it mattered most.
