Defense focusing on getting sacks instead of playing total defense

Has NOTHING to do with the way the Cowboys are playing right now. Zero.
Yeah both sides of the ball came out unprepared to play football. They needed some preseason snaps.

2020 we came out first game and nearly matched them.

Nah, DLaw had Fields dead on his sights and just didn't play it well and got juked. He does need to control his speed and force Fields upfield rather than outside where no other defenders, but it was the right scheme. The only problem i had was having no spy on Fields from the first play of the game. Pass rushing is fine with me. Forces turnovers and bad passes, not just sacks.

On most of the plays, he had to make a choice between playing Fields or the RB. I broke this down in another thread. On the TD run up the middle, he went for Fields and the running back raced up the middle while the offense had the line and linebackers walled off. He didn't buy the fake to the RB on the next play, though, and buried Fields on the two-point try. Later, he tried to play both the RB and Fields and it didn't go so well. Fields kept the ball and Lawrence couldn't bring him down.

The plays were designed to cause that problem, leaving Lawrence unblocked with the difficult choice of whether to play the RB or the QB. He stops his rush and plays contain on the QB, the QB hands off and the RB runs between the wall and Lawrence. If he goes for the RB, the QB pulls the ball out and goes around him. There are some things he could have done better, but one player trying to handle a two-way is generally not going to work out well for the one player.

so we have the best defense we have had in ... 20 plus years. We allow the 3rd or 4th fewest points in the league and you are going to come in here and tell Quinn what he needs to do???? Are you kidding me? We have so many people on here telling us that Quinn should be head coach and how great he is,... he is an amazing D coach,.... but you presume to tell him what he shoud be doing?? Go to a 4-3 and get an old tackle nobody wants??????? Sounds like a plan.... smh
Well, hopefully he now knows how an onside kick works. Anyway, his run defense is not good, lotta work to do, period.

Because running the ball well and stopping the run have little correlation to winning. The Bears gashed the Cowboys for 240 yards rushing and lost by 20 points.

Did you know Seattle Seahwaks won the SB being the number #1 rush defense and Broncos with Manning 2nd time.

Too many of the defensive players are focusing too much on sacks instead of playing total defense.

Hanging With a Boys made a great point about how D-Law & Micah were rushing wildly with no thoughts about outside containment knowing you are facing an elite mobile QB. The ***discussion starts at 26:00 time marker.***

Quinn needs to go back to little more traditional 4-3 defense with more rules and structure for players to follow.

And last of all Jerry needs to sign Suh or trade for a stud DT/ NT like Jeffrey Simmons from the Titans.

Cowboys defense is 4th in points allowed...

So Pollard had little to do with the win this past Sunday?

Running the ball and stopping the run is directly correlated to winning. But it depends on the size of the disparity. If one team rushes for 240, and the other for 227, then the disparity isn't big enough to make a difference. But if one team rushes for 127, and the other 58, then that disparity is large enough to make a difference. So, stopping the run and running the ball, with a large disparity is directly related to winning and losing.

It’s not, though. All the analytics and advanced metrics are clear on that point.

It’s the scheme Quinn wants
He wants to create havoc and cause turnovers
And it’s worked so far fairly well
It may not work every game though
When he needs to sit back and play more conservative, I trust him to do so

This is strictly a Quinn issue. He needs to sit down with both MM and JJ to discuss possible piece that will be needed to fix

This is a major issue and Quinn needs to answer for it since he's calling the defensive plays.

yeah, i wouldn’t call it wildly rushing. should he have played outside contain, probably. but he was a hair length away from two monster sacks and i’m sure no one would’ve been critiquing

That’s a great point…I think the DL is playing pass first and then run; the ends are rushing upfield and are losing outside contain in their quest to reach the QB. I think this is something that can easily corrected if we can be more disciplined in their rush and remain in their rush lanes.

You're right, but I think this is more by design that anything to be honest. There are some issues that should be easily correctible, such as DLaw just playing too wild and letting Fields escape to the outside. With that said though I think that Quinn is perfectly fine giving up some yards on the ground in exchange for sacks and ints. Situationally when this team has needed stops in the run game they have come through in obvious run downs.....big exception probably being the Eagle game.

I worry about this team playing mobile QBs more than I worry about the run defense overall.

I have to agree, Quinn was outcoached Sunday. This was not the way to play the Bears and Fields
