Hey fans, has anyone realized how much this team has taken on a defensive approach? With a $40 million QB, and high paid running back, you'd think this is an offensive team.

I think we owe it all to Dan Quinn, he has shaped this team, and is the major influence on the shape of this roster. Just look at the safety position, a position that haunted us for years. Year after year we ignored it, now we're loaded with safeties!

The D line is loaded!! The depth chart shows we have several defensive tackles and pass rushers. Can anyone name when we've had so much depth in this area???

I'm expecting big things from our defense. But just because we have numbers, I'm expecting the offense to capitalize on any takeaways the defense gives us!

Does anyone feel that Jerry is ready to agree that this is a defensive team?? Please give your thoughts...

No doubt. Solid all around, especially if guys like Sam Williams pan out.

I think Gallimore will drop jaws this year. He looks really tough out there.

As far as takeaways, we'll have enough pressure, and there are ballhawks in our defense. I think Mukuamu wins a job sometime this season. That's how good I think he is.

They will find a way to utilize Bland, too.

I think people are sleeping on just how good our defensive interior line is. We don't have established stars like Aaron Donald or Vita Vea but we do have a group of ascending players at the position and IMO to a man they'll be better than last year.

With Mukuamu I am in two minds. Hooker looked to have freakish potential coming out of College and this is probably the first year he's had a clear run with injuries. He could be one of the league's top safeties. Equally, he simply hasn't shown in his years in the league while Mukuamu looks a natural ball hawk.

The defense is coming around. Now if they could just build a offense that could impose their will in the run game, we'd be ready. Like Troy Aikman said, if we didn't run against eight man fronts Emmitt wouldn't own the rushing title.

Well it’s gonna have to be and will need to carry us because I don’t see the offense doing much

I thought Gallimore was primed to make that leap last year, but the elbow injury slowed him down. I've been watching him since his freshman year in college and I've been telling folks, the man has the skill set to be an elite tackle. I think he makes that a reality this year.

Have high hopes for Sam, Osa, Bland, Cox, and Clark just off the top of my head. This defense is young, but there is so much juice on that depth chart, I think we're going to see some fireworks this year.

On paper the defense looks better than the offense but the fans who think the defense is good enough to carry the team to a good season despite the offensive struggles we may have will be sadly mistaken.

Let's hope so but it remains to be seen. For all the talk about the weakness of the offense with an inept qb, replacement tackles, and unproven wr's they were the higher ranked unit last season. The defense made good strides and created many turnovers but in the playoffs when it mattered, we can say that the offense sputtered but the defense was also gashed early and often as well. If they can continue to create turnovers while stopping then run I like our chances.

The defense isn’t going to have to “carry” the team. But, they should be very good which will make it easier for the offense by forcing turnovers, getting them good field position, and giving up fewer points than in the past. Our offense is almost certainly going to be less potent than last year, but it’s going to be far from anemic. They’re still going to move the ball and score enough to win most games. They won’t need to ( and almost assuredly won’t be capable) lead the league in scoring like last year, but they’re not going to fall off the cliff like some seem to think.

The D is looking great, but that is usually the case early in the calendar. The problem is this FO often builds a D that disappears come playoff time. This yer will possibly be exasperated by the 17 game schedule and an offense with lots of question marks, from the starting tailback, to the entire line (minus one future HOF-er), and the WR corps.

I like Big Bo! Hope he ends up being a gamechanger. The kid has some talent. Curious to see how the offseason benefited him, but I think he's a year or two away from being a real force.
Based on information coming from training camp (and his play in the preseason games) I think it’s safe to say Bo has made a pretty big jump from last season which isn’t uncommon for rookies. How will that translate to games that count remains to be seen, but I think he’ll contribute. We needed size in the middle of our defense and he definitely has that. And to your comment, I agree he won’t reach his potential in year 2. Very few players do. I’m pulling for him for obvious reasons and because he played at Kentucky.

I think you are right. When you say elite, I think he can make the pro bowl this year. We have our own guy that people forget about.

Defense wins championships...

Not like it used to. The rules promote scoring and defenses are at a disadvantage. You need solid defense but you have to have a productive high scoring offense to win these days. Way too difficult to hold down QBs from making plays and putting points up. You need a defense that can make critical stops especially in the fourth quarter with a game on the line.

This team is by far more heavily invested on the offensive side of the ball. But I agree that it will be the defense that takes this team where it is headed.

The wildcard will now be the kicker. Turpin will improve the return game and improve field position but when opposing defenses get stingy it'll be up to the kicking game and that worries me more than anything on offense or defense.
