Defense needs five upgrades

You don't think Romo could net a third round pick?

I concede he might not, but that's what I'm thinking. A three...maybe a two. We will need at least two interested trading options or nothing will push up the value.

If we can upgrade the defense at five positions Dallas can put a top-ten defense on the field in 2017 and take it all the way to a championship. Anyone making an objective analysis of the defense must concede this year's team didn't have the personnel to put the hard brakes on opposing offenses.

If we can be above average at 3 or 4 positions...and close to average at all the other positions...we can be a top ten defense.

Here is how it could happen:

- Demarcus Lawrence comes back with a healthy back and plays up to his abilities.
- Jaylon arrives with bang
- Scandrick returns to full health
- Byron Jones, maybe Irving jump to another level
- Anthony Brown and Maelik Collins go from rookie-OK to good...or even to great
- Charles Tapper arrives, contributes
- In a draft rich in corners and edge rushers...we grab a couple...or three
-We land an impact free agent, and maybe a backup corner.

More Jeff Heath.... He played a great game, and almost won it twice for us with his sack ( minus strip) and 2nd Int ( minus penalty on Brown. Plus he's got some speed 4.38 best - 4.4 - 4.5 range consistently...

Also just saw he was being groomed as backup placekicker as it has been revealed Dan Bailey has a disc problem

it's definitely possible, nothing would shock me if a team is desperate and thinks theyre just a QB away! However, if I had to guess, I would think a 5th round pick that can escalate up to maybe a 2nd round pick based on how many games Romo was able to play is plausible.

also, after reading up a little bit on the cap, it seems the cowboys would actually free up more room by cutting Romo post June 1 as opposed to trading him.. Correct if I'm wrong...

What's the deal with Mario Addison on the Panthers? 9.5 sacks last year. What kind of contract is he looking at?

He's 29, so a shade on the older side, but we could use a veteran pass rushing end in here.

geez... it seems as though the "pulled hammy" curse this team used to have (Miles Austin was the co-founder of that group) has transferred to "bad back" (Romo being the CEO)... interesting

yep, 5 sacks in 5 games in 2014, 6 sacks 2015, 9.5 this season. he seems to have figured it out. although, edge rushers have more success when they have upper echelon DT's in Lotulelei (spelling) and Short.

True. And I know some will balk at the age since he'll be 30 at the start of the next season. But he seems like the perfect FA signing. Might not be too expensive, wont be a cap killer at his age, and can provide something we need.

Admittedly, I have nary a clue what his market value might be. He might way pricier than I expect.

Its hard to tell, Vernon got paid after having one decent season. But maybe Addison being near 30 would drive the price down a little bit. I know he was undrafted and bounced around the league for a bit until finding his groove in Carolina. Either he was a late bloomer, or a system pass rusher. I do think being 30 in his case isn't that big of a deal because he doesn't have that many miles on his body. Who knows what he'll get. All it takes is one dumb team with boat loads of cash.

We'd free up more for this year, but then have a big hit on him again in '18.

that's right! If cut this year frees up more cash this year, but also carries dead money next year. trade gets Romo off the books before 18 offseason

We will get at least a 2nd rounder for Romo. So many teams need a top 10 QB. That can and will help us move up the board if we want to.

We can get 3 young starters for the defense with a 1st and 2 2nd rounders.
