Defense needs to strip the ball

After watching teams like the Bears, Jets, Steelers, and Ravens play defense the biggest difference that I notice is that those teams actively try and strip the ball WHILE they are tackling...They also hold guys up and have other members of their team join in on the tackle and attempt to strip the football..

I am sure other members have brought this up but I haven't seen it anywhere..I am glad we got 3 turnovers on Sunday..but I believe if we want to be more consistent with creating turnovers that it ultimately starts with our players attempting to strip the ball..

As long as you have good control of the ball carrier great go for the ball just make sure you can get him down. That is the most important thing

Our secondary needs to be nastier. I agree.
Just containing offense is not enough.

I think our defense leaves teams in game when they could be put away with a BIG HIT, or a strip or an INT.

I agree with this wholeheartedly...the most amazing thing I have seen from players on other teams is that they are able to dive at a ball carrier, make a swipe at the football and STILL make the tackle...I can't recall the last time I have seen one of our players try this.

you might have hit the nail on the head with this one..those cover 2 type of defenses (like the bears) have those physical corners..they are always sticking their heads in their trying to make something happen..

our guys definitely tend to shy away from contact...I have seen Ball and Jenkins on numerous occasions backpedal when one of their teammates are getting ready to make the tackle..as opposed to get their noses dirty and helping out..

the difference is in the secondary.

those teams have much more physical players in the back line.

definitely, how do we fix this problem? I love Newman and Jenkins at CB...I guess we need to replace Ball and Sensy with some more physical cover guys..

We do and I have seen guys coming in trying take the ball as his teammate has control of the ball carrier. For me I would rather see good fundamental tackles than guys leaving their feet trying to make highlight reels and end up letting the ball carrier make big yards after a blown tackle

I have yet to see one player miss a tackle in attempts to go for the strip...at least not in the few plays that stick out in my mind..Urlacher did it numerous times last night and didn't miss one of those tackles..

I also saw woodson cause a couple fumbles and he didnt miss either tackle either

Woodson is amazing with those strips / punches. Roy will be a big strip target in GB.

Every time our defense gets a big hit it's a penalty I swear to god.

As long as guy has a player secure fine I have no problem with that. My main concern though is making sure the runner is not picking up extra yard or breaking free because you are trying stripe the ball.

I have seen many instances over the years that the ball carrier ends up picking up the 1st extending a drive because the defender was going for the ball and not getting the runner to the ground and have seen it in Cowboy games.

No but trying to strip the ball usually leads to teams getting 4 or 5 more yards then they should've.

Why? How many times has Roy been stripped in his career? Hell how many times has he been stripped in Dallas? Once? Once on a play that should've given him forward progress?

Ware goes for the strip often when he gets close to the QB or is chasing a runner from behind. I love that.

He got stripped in GB last year... by Charles Woodson...

scroll down to "Roy Williams catch and fumble" under the 'watch' tab.

I thought that was a fumble. There was no way Woodson swiped hard enough for Roy to fumble that. Roy got ahead of himself trying to gain more yardage and fumbled. But that's what I felt about it last year. Didn't re-watch the video above.

what are you talking about??

Do you really differentiate between a strip and a fumble?? who cares

and go re watch the video...you can call it a swat, a strip, a fumble, or anything else you can come up with..Woodson caused that fumble

Yeah Woodson caused that fumble for sure, along with another forced fumble on Romo, and an interception as well.

The only thing I like about that video is for some reason, Doug Free somehow ends up in the skirmish to recover the fumble, despite it being 30 yards down field.

I am quite certain we lost that fumble..

I just have a memory of me thinking that that fumble was a game changer..mainly because we were in position to put up points had we not lost the ball..
